How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

You need to understand that some people respect their roots. TurkishCypriots also respect their roots. I understand both sides. There is nothing wrong with that. Also Armenian Cypriots are proud of their Armenian backround .

Our concern is that hiding behind a Cypriot flag and singing the Greek National Antem is a big hypocricy. We dont want double standards and two rules for everything OTHERWISE CORUPTION will flourish and the conswequences will be obvious.

I believe in Cypriot Identity but not under the above hypocricy. The Red Che quevara Flags were a big mistake. Many RED flags have been flying everywhere.......What image does this give

On pentadaxtilos is written we are proud of being Turks.

Michalis, Che Guevara's image is a universal and international symbol of leftists, socialists and communists, for decades now! It symbolizes internationalism, revolutionism and the solidarity between and among the oppressed classes by totalitarian regimes, across country boarders! It is used by some leftists in Cyprus under this context, both by GCs and TCs alike! It is not used under any different context, and it doesn't mean anything in our case, since we live in a near perfect welfare democracy!

Now, if Miltiades has real (and not fabricated) evidence that he was a murderer, as he describes him, I do not know about it, nor those people carrying his banners last night do know about such an aspect of Che's life! Neither of course they celebrate him because they know he was a cold blood executionist (if he was,) but only because they regard him as a symbol of international solidarity among oppressed classes!

We have not "adopted" Communist principles ... we have elected a President with Communist principles because we decided he was the best man to lead us out of the mire of Turks using those guiding principles.

We can be members of Europe and have a Communist President ... again that does not make us hypocrites ... just free to choose our leader.

The Greek National Anthem is also the Cypriot National Anthem ..... so where is the hypocrisy? :?

Like all Anthems it's just a rousing jingle ... it's high time we stopped mixing tunes with politics anyway ....

This is to be seen in Practice. I also believe in Cypriot Identity but not behing the AKEL Ideology. And I know AKEL how many times has rejected European Direction. Changing positions at the last minute to get the power does not sound very convincing.

Got to agree with kifeas on this I remember as a young teenager in 1970-71 When I was going through my 'young socialist' phase all of our group wore t shirts with the iconic image of che geuvara on it. We didnt know a great deal about his history then but to us he symbolised a freedom away from the ties of government and the hope that we, normal working class people could have our say in the way our country should be run instead of being dictated to by the so called upper classes who to us at the time seemed totallly out of touch with reality.

I was amazed when afew years later i found out that Che was not his name but in fact meant Friend or Comrade. This term is still used in the Falklland Islands today.

I saw a really good film a couple of years ago. I think it was called the Motorcycle Diaries which was a bio-pic of Che Geuveras early life...Recommended[/quote]

For the sake of accuracy, the Greek national anthem is not constitutionally or statutory adopted as the national anthem of Cyprus! Unlike the flag, there has never been an institutionally adopted anthem for the country, nor did the London-Zurich agreements or the 1960 constitution provided for one! During the initial 3 years of the Republic (1960-63) a 5 second un-constructed fanfare used to be played by the police philharmonic, when foreign leaders would visit Cyprus and a need for a national anthem would emerge! After the events 1963/64, the RoC remained in the hands of the GC community, and the Greek national anthem begun to be played instead, rather arbitrarily in my opinion, just like so many other things done on this basis by both communities!

What is important to know is that, to the best of my knowledge, the Greek national anthem for Cyprus is not an institutionalized one by any statutory enactment or law!

Well there seems to be some sort of confusion amongst us Cyprus flag carrying individuals.

The message that comes out is
1)We consider ourselves hardline CYpriots who believe that there is one race on this island, Cypriots. Yet we support Tassos Papadopoulos who has rightly made it his struggle to protect Cypriot Hellenism

2) Our party DEKO had nothing but Greek flags waving yesturday, Yet we hate Hellenic symbols and despise the DISY supporters who carry them.

3) We believe in democracy yet we despise DISY for voting for the Annan plan and we will never forgive these traitors.

4) We accusse the TC's of always bringing up 1963 like a broken record yet we despise DISY because of EOKA B and because they might do it again.

5) The archbishop supports Tassos in the first round and we stay silent, yet ridicule him when he supports Kasoulides in the 2nd round.

6) We consider Tassos ideals as heroic in defense of this country and our identity on this island, yet we now consider the teaching of our religion at school a fascist requirement.

COnfused? We all are. :?

No DT, you are not confused! You are just caught into a phase of having and trying to defend the indefensible! Your logic tells you one thing, but you "duty" towards the polarising rhetoric and practices of your affiliated party, tells you another! It is called cognitive dissonance! I wish you soon get back to your more sensible and genuine ideas and views!
