New Govt

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

New Govt

Postby DT. » Tue Feb 19, 2008 9:37 am

I will hazard a guess here but the grapevine is saying we're going to see a government with Kassoulides as president and Markos Kyprianou the EU Commissioner as foreign minister. In return Deko will propose to its supporters to vote for Kassoulides.

These 2 gentlemen are 2 extremely popular and well known individuals currently working in Brussels. Their knowledge and contacts in the EU as Euro MP and EU commissioner make them second to none to help us see Cyprus become a different sort of player in the EU. A productive EU member with the friends to back up its actions will better create the carrot/stick enviroment that Turkey needs to help solve this problem.

Just a hunch....

This is a positive development If the above happens!

Communist Ideology will harm the economy and I can predict companies leaving the island for a better destination.

Good point michalis5354, 30 odd years ago a Bishop was in charge and now possibly a communist? I find that very surprising? A communist government will be at conflict with individual commercial growth won't it?

I usually avoid commenting on Cyprus internal politics. In the case however of AKEL with its communist philosophy , coming to power would be utterly detrimental to Cyprus. The idea that Communist ideals are still preserved in Cyprus is laughable just as the Greek Communist party in Greece with that woman that is wheeled in and out of news studios whenever some anti- American story is circulating.
Is it not time for AKEL ditch this outdated and defeated philosophy , after all Easter Europe has including the mother of them all Russia .

I can't take it anymore.
All you people saying that you are not supporting Christofias because of his communist idealogy. Do you live in the dark ages or something?
Do you honestly believe that if he gets elected we would have a communist government like in the Soviet Union so many years ago?
Cut the crap and wake up.
Communism is dead. Christofias was in power one way or the other a few times before and I never recall flags of USSR in the presidential house.
Whose policies do you think were in place in the last 5 years or during Vasiliou's presidency. He is the president of the parliament for 2 years now.

Also, accusing him of not wanting to join the EU - he only said that we are entering the EU only to help us in solving the cy problem, and that entering the union will harm the economy of the island. And guess what? Thats what happened, but that was a necesary sacrifice!

I'm a Christofias supporter btw

Just a short reminder of what one might read on looking up AKEL :
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL)(Ανορθωτικό Κόμμα Εργαζόμενου Λαού)

Leader Dimitris Christofias

Founded 1926
Headquarters Nicosia, Cyprus

Official ideology/
political position Communism
Elements of Eurocommunism
European Parliament Group GUE/NGL

Website http://www.akel.org.cy/
The AKEL (Greek: Ανορθωτικό Κόμμα Εργαζόμενου Λαού) is a communist party in Cyprus. It supports an independent, demilitarised and non-aligned Cyprus, and a federal solution of the internal aspect of the Cyprus problem. It places particular emphasis on re-approchement with the Turkish Cypriots. It supported entry into the European Union with certain reservations.

It was founded in 1926 with the name Communist Party of Cyprus (KKK). The communist party was supporting the independence of Cyprus as a precursor of Enosis (union with Greece) which was the main aim of all Greek Cypriots. The party became illegal in 1931 when the British colonial government imposed restrictions in civil rights following a nationalist riot. In 1941, leading members of the underground communist party and others founded AKEL. In the first municipal elections in 1943 (before that mayors were appointed) AKEL candidates became mayors of Limassol (Ploutis Servas)and Famagusta (Adam

I would have thought that any "foreigner " wanting to find out what AKEL stands for would probably come to the conclusion that it is a Communist party . The only reason that KKK was dropped was because the British declared it illegal , as mentioned much earlier my father was imprisoned for being a founding member of KKK. He shared his time in prison with the well famous poet who suffered the same destiny , Tefkros Anthias.

I have heard Christofias a couple of days referring to a MIX economy NOT a FREE Economy. What does mix economy mean? Is it this the new philosophy of Europe? Maybe the power of the state to contol Everything and less incentives for change and progress! Why all this fuss for postponing the Euro Curency at a later date and not now?

All you people saying that you are not supporting Christofias because of his communist idealogy. Do you live in the dark ages or something?

Thanks Miltiades - I do not know enough about the party to really get involved with the discussion, what I said was just my own initial reaction - I will just read this thread from now on and hope to learn more!!!
