Breakaway Turkish Cypriots Hail Kosovo Independence - AFP
NICOSIA (AFP)--The breakaway Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus hailed Monday Kosovo's declaration of independence, saying no people should be forced to live under the sovereignty of others.
"I salute the independence of Kosovo," said Mehmet Ali Talat, president of the TRNC, which is recognized only by Turkey, in a statement.
"I ask that those who object to the independence of Kosovo take into consideration that no people can be forced to live under the rule of another people," he said.
The internationally recognized Greek Cypriot government of Cyprus is among several European Union members reluctant to back Kosovo because of their own territorial issues.
Talat said last week that Turkish Cypriots remain committed to U.N. efforts to reunify the island, expected to be revived after presidential elections in the Greek Cypriot south.
Incumbent Tassos Papadopoulos, who led Greek Cypriots in rejecting a U.N. reunification plan in 2004, was eliminated in the first round Sunday.
His two challengers - former foreign minister Ioannis Kasoulides and Communist Party leader Demetris Christofias - who will face off in the second round next weekend, have both pledged to renew contacts with the Turkish Cypriots.
Peace talks have been stalled since April 2004, when the Greek Cypriots rejected the reunification plan, which received overwhelming Turkish Cypriot support.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey seized its northern third in response to an Athens-engineered Greek Cypriot coup aimed at union with Greece.
