The mystery of MOTs

Postby hellopaul » Mon Feb 18, 2008 2:28 pm

I have it on good authority that you need to get the first MOT test for your car after two, four or five years :? . Take your pick - it seems to depend on who you ask/time of day/does the month have an R in it. I'm talking about age from new, by the way, not frequency of re-testing. I have asked car dealers, car importers, garages and friends.

So, I am conducting a survey, and will average out the answers, then get my car MOT'd after this appropriate/random amount of time. Or should i just not bother at all, which is probably the 'cypriot' way.

Hope someone can shed some light on this one of the many mysteries of cyprus.

Thanks!

You'll find that, after four years, you will receive a letter from the relevant government department that will stipulate the need for you have your car mot'd before you will be able to get your next tax disc.

You take the letter with you to an mot garage (I just used Fairways for my Pajero) and they will then notify the department that you have had it done.

That's how it worked for me anyway.

You will soon find out quick enough when you try to renew your road tax as you can't without a valid MOT being recorded on the governments computer.

Mind you that raises the point of how many don't actually renew the road tax either ~ I know a couple of people that didn't renew for 2007 and have still got tax discs in their car window valid till DEC 2006 ~ I honestly can't see what they are trying to achieve as they still have to pay the back tax due before they can renew for this year :?

MOT after 4 years for a new car then every 2 years thereafter

From here:

Cyprus Mail: News Articles in English, 02-05-09

The MOT test was introduced last November and is expected to
cover 240,000 cars over four years old.

Good grief ... do you guys even know how to look under a bonnet of a car ...

How could something so simple, as an MOT, defeat you? ...

MOT checks should start after a certain mileage has been reached and not the number of years of ownership which are meaningless. 120,000 km is a good time to start.

Unless you own a Lada, which should have an MOT check up every 500 km. :)

Dont laugh at Russian cars. In central Greece where there are real mountains, both in height and extent, and not the piddly 6000 feet of Troodos, the most reliable and capable car is the Lada Niva. For many years the only cars that could take the pounding of a country taxi on unpaved roads of the islands were the Volgas. Yeah, I know, they do not have on board computers!
