I do not need any more toys ... I am down-shifting :D

I do not place any value on material goods ... and I am particularly sickened by the images of Turks enjoying the fruits of the labours of others ...

Umit you are a pig!

Pride comes before a fall .....

Enjoy your moment in the Sun, little one.....

Like the dancing Cricket, you will beg for mercy when the pot runs dry.

I'm sorry to see that despite my plea at the start of this posting yesterday, attitudes have not changed and that applies to EVERYONE who is to blame!
Meanwhile,I would suggest a a few things to the other British commentator who posted yesterday:
Makarios had no choice but to sign the Zurich agreement or face partition in 1960-even Greece would not support him if he refused!
Colonial 'divide and rule' policy was used here to set Greek and Turkish Cypriots against each other as punishment for the Greek Cypriots for starting the EOKA campaign and this has been admitted!AKEL supporters were the only serious opponents of the EOKA movement because they considered then, and quite rightly, that it would have very bad consequences due to the geo-political situation in the world at that time. Some of them were considered to be risking their lives and the Colonial government sent them to England for safety.
It is hard to see how any system can function if there is a 50/50 veto by the two sides and this is why Makarios wanted to change it as the government was continually deadlocked due to the Turkish Cypriots use of the veto. The fact that he went ahead and did this unilaterally without the support of Athens has remained one of the most controversial subjects concernng Cyprus ever since, especially as partitionists in Turkey and on the Turkish Cypriot side used it as the golden opportunity they had been waiting for!
I do fully agree though that the Greek-Cypriot political establishment which took control of Cyprus after independence bear a lot of responsibility for the mess we are in today and there are reputable historians and commentators such as Makarios Droushitis and Yiangos Mikellides who have written extensively about this-if you can find anything in English by them ,read it as it is well worthwhile.Droushiotis has made a film called 'Poison' which deals with the way the government here behaved in the period leading up to the referendum and the two screenings of it held in Nicosia last month were packed! The good thing about it too is that it only portrays events but does not comment on them.
But all this aside, the fact remains that the root of the problem here has a lot to do with Britains colonial interference for its strategic purposes-e.g. Anthony Eden and Suez etc so before you critcise the Greek-Cypriots too much for starting the EOKA campaign you would do well to read about what Churchill promised the Cypriots for joining the Allied Regiment in world war two-and then we reneged on it afterwards!
It is also ironic and even tragic, that nobody seriously asked Greece whether they wanted Cyprus to be joined with it anyway, nor did the Greek-Cypriots seriously consider whether they would gain anything from it,even if they did!Especially after Independence, the new hierarchy here tasted the spoils of power and would probably have not wanted it anyway despite what they declared!

Greece is a fellow EU partner..... like Italy, France etc.

We have historical and ancestral, and now political associations with them all.
