A more acceptable term for what I think you mean, is to call it the "Turkish Occupied Side" ....

I'll let you off for now 'cos you are new :D

Can you expand on this please?

What tensions where you aware of as a teenager? .....(in what was supposed to have been the most lovey-dovey part of our history, which a few TCs are demanding we go back to).

He is talking of the years 1963 or thereabouts and not after 1974. PLEASE NOTE!!

Deniz .... for a minute there, you made me think you might know this Des :?

To aid your confusion Deniz, I have enlarged, and highlighted in red the precise years your "friend" was describing.

Well, thank you my dear. You have risen from the ashes. I almost missed you. How are you by the way. Cyprus is treating you well I hope.

Couldn't ask for anything more Deniz ...

Why the change in handle and soft shoe approach,to be fair that underlying cut throat approach is still there...

Where would we be without our Phoenix. She is the 'spice' of the forum. Horrible on its own but delectable with other spices. When used in moderation it works out fine.

I reserve judgement on that one...I never have been fond of people who cry wolf after the fact.

Deniz, the name of the service clup you used to listen to the Brit bands was...The Roundel Club...There was a swimming pool there and we kids would trek across the river everyday from kavala Street to go swimming. We only went to school in the mornings in summer.

The last place we lived in 1963 was a block of flats overlooking the Ledra Palace and the Roundel club. There were poor Turkish families living in mud brick houses behind us. All demolished now and in the middle of no man's land. The Roundel Club is still there with the roof caved in and the swimming pool drained.
One band that used to play in the club was made up of young RAF blokes. They became famous briefly later as Hedgehoppers Anonymous and had one big hit..." It's Good news Week, someone's dropped a bomb somehwere etc... My sister used to go out with one of them.

Thanks Des for the info. Can you remember the block of flats which 'looked over the club and Ledra Palace. The oly block of flats worth mentioning those days was the Harman Apartments. This directly faced the Hotel and almost next door to the club. I lived next to the 'club'. Our gardens were adjoined.

Regards

Picture number 7 is a shot of the rear of the Ledra Palace looking towards the Kyrenia Mountains. It looks like it was taken in the sixties. In the middle you can see a block of flats. That is where we used to lived in 1963. Two palm trees in front of it. The houses between the flats and the Ledra Palace have all been swept away now and that is now no man's land.

Thanks for the pics Des. I must admit that I have never seen the area where I lived in from that angle. However I do recognise most of the houses and the unbuilt land plots where we dug communication trenches to protect pedestrians from sniper fire from the Palace.

Cheers.
