Turkey cautious about kosovo independance???

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Turkey cautious about kosovo independance???

Postby eracles » Sun Feb 17, 2008 3:47 pm

Turkey has a cautious approach towards the independence of Kosovo because there are some worries in Ankara that the situation could set an example for Northern Cyprus and Northern Iraq, Vatan daily said.

'northern' Iraq is obvious but in what sense would Turkey be cautious about it setting an example for 'northern' Cyprus?

My instinctive reaction would be that Turkey may be cautious about such "domino effects" arising from this declaration of independence and partial recognition by some "countries" ....... because the "TRNC" may be granted independence, not from the RoC, but from Turkey :D

You forget something important Zan... the "TRNC" is the ONLY entity declared illegal by the world's highest authority! Even a little 2x4 rock in the middle of the ocean with a sole penguin sitting on it has better chances of recognition than the "TRNC"!

""the "TRNC" may be granted independence, not from the RoC, but from Turkey""

Very astute observation. And please all here remmebr that Turkey has never, not once, asked for official partition and independence for TRNC. Genuine independence for the TRNC would mean the same for the south too. And no one wants one independent Cyprus, they are definitely not going to settle for TWO independent Cypruses.

Also focus on the 2000 cops and judges moving into Kossovo as of tonight to safeguard the rights of ethnic Serbs, enforce the law and stop organized crime and money laundering. It aint over yet. We are just starting round one.

Do you think Turkey also fear that if the safeguards for minority rights in the Ahtisaari proposal for Kosovo are judged to be adequate by the international community, then they coulds also be applied to united Cyprus?
The Ahtisaari proposal is here...
