I have just read this in the online edition of AFRIKA,in Erol Atabek's column...A true story taken from a book of memoirs by Faruk Nazif Ozok, a Turkish government minister from Trabzon...In 1975 the then Employment Minister,Ali Riza Uzuner, is in Trabzon personally putting some of his own selection of settlers onto a bus to be taken (eventually) to Cyprus...He notices an older, bearded man he knows struggling to get on to the bus with something heavy under his arm, wrapped in a piece of cloth...He rushes to the old man's aid...Feeling how heavy the object is he asks the older man what it is... "Don't tell anyone," whispers the older man,"it is my father's tomb stone..." Absolutely bewildered the Minister asks the man why is he taking it to Cyprus... "Don't be stupid,Ali Riza!",says the man. "If they tell us to get out of Cyprus one day,I will tell them my father is buried there. And this is the proof!!!"
The irony is,after 34 years that man is most likely buried in the North. And his children have his tomb stone plus their grandfather's to claim their rightful place among Cypriots! I wonder if the 3 GC gentlemen running for President in the ROC today know what they will have to deal with some day soon, if they want to solve our little Cyprus problem...
