Recently when driving I noticed the increasing Police force on the road. Normally with such man power on the roads you would believe they were uncovering some mass drugs deal, or trying to capture a serial killer.
What downed on me was that most of the Police force on the streets are to prevent road speeding. A speed which in my eyes is way too slow.
Where I live we have a dual-carriageway style road with the speed limit of 50km/h. Nobody sticks to it, and if you do, you are sure to get a few horns.
There are many road accidents in general here. I don't believe it has to do anything with speeding though, sure some drivers take their Evolutions to new extremes, but that's not the main reason.
It's mostly due to drunk-driving and road conditions. Notice how underpowered most road lights are. Some areas don't even have the luxury of these inadequate visual aids. Let's not even mention the road conditions, even on the highway your car wobbles (nope, that's not down to my tyres, or age of my vehicle), but instead due to it's uneven surface, particularly the road going to Nicosia.
Police even make roads more dangerous by putting speed cameras on highways. All drivers slam on their breaks and go ridiculously slow. I had one driver in-front of me going 50km/h because of the forces presence. Not drawing comparisons, but is it not actually dangerous to put speed traps on highways. It's my understanding that it is dangerous to stop on the hard shoulder altogether, never-mind to be flagged down on the highway to receive a speeding fine.
It's all gone completely out of proportion. I don't know how popular the Police force are, but I am guessing not very.
