I have had bad experience with many companies. I rather not slag them off.

I was kindly given this piece of advice, which maybe I should share.

RULES
1. Make sure you agree on a price beforehand
2. Get something in writing
3. Never, NEVER, NEVER!!!! pay them upfront for anything.

Most business people have common character traits to prostitutes (not that I would know), once you pay them upfront they could not care if they do the job or not, seriously it's just like that. I did a terrible mistake of paying somebody upfront, I basically had to beg him to do the job, he eventually did it but I learned my lesson.

My rules apply for everything! I must warn you however if you happen to pay the person complete and something goes wrong, you can be sure he will outright ignore you so he would not have to repair it. Even if the product has a guarantee they will ignore you, it's a joke. People only seem to move their ass when you have a stone-hearted solicitor attacking them.

The rules mostly apply to small companies (making under 2 million a year gross), larger companies have better business ethics, particularly in Cyprus. The larger the company the safer you tend to be, no always though.

If your new and naive and know hardly anybody expect the worse. Whenever you buying anything you should tell them you have been here for a good ten years, and you live locally, never be too specific on your living location.

Hope this helps, this is not like the UK. Unfortunately everybody seems to be related to everybody else, even if I was to mention a company name there is a probability that somebody in this forum would have close ties with the company in question. For that reason I cannot tell you the company names.

Posting your experience should elicit help and advice ... but it's bad practice to give away Company / Individual names.

Alternatively .... you could get confidential and legal advice from Citizens Advice Bureau.

Normally I would badmouth the hell out of them, but not online :-(. Is there such a bureau in Cyprus.

Yes there is advice across EU countries:

And one of their subsidiary help sites:
