Hi Guys XXX

Why do all new immigrants do that?? They think they can come to Cyprus and be rich and famous with an idea Cyprus has not heard of, then surprise!! Someone has bin there done it and got the T-Shirt...

What I have learnt is that you NOW can not get any thing past a Cypriot, they know everything and we do not know anything lol..

From my experience many Cypriot business people are not as professional as business people in the UK. They often turn up late for meetings, pick up the phone in the middle of a meeting, are really bad at paying for services on time and from what I have seen there seems to be a lot of tax dodging. There is also a great deal of rudeness and lack of knowing how a business person should behave towards others.

If a person with high business acumen starts a business here and gives better service with a better attitude they should do well, even if there are competitors (if they can converse in Greek). There have been a number of businesses who have been assessed and asked to pay huge VAT bills recently so the government and the EU is becoming far stricter with taxes. The days of dodgy dealing and sloppy business is coming to an end.

From experience it is not easy to compete in business in Cyprus.Business hours vary, money talks and Cypriots are not the most well mannered in the arena. However if you can adapt to there way of thinking and working the sky is the limit.
Behind the most succesful Cypriot businesses there is always a foreign national who has brought in expertise from other parts of the world. If you have a good product, idea I see no reason why you should not do well,if you are prepared to realise business is business and friends are secondry.
Good luck.

And you gathered that, exactly how, Phoenix/Oracle/whatever your name is now? From one of only four posts I've made?

My limited intellect allowed me to post what I considered to be a number of reasonable questions, sensibly written and hopefully, well punctuated and intelligible. I also thought that my polite introductory manner would help to serve me well into my first serious foray into the forum.

I also apologised (in advance) for my lack of knowledge in subjects that may offend or that I had heard/read wrongly.

My is bad.

Seems like you know yourself well ... to apologise in advance

Oracle,
My God...did you have to be so nasty???

Rawk,
Are we so picky on here that you have to pick up on spelling mistakes??

Deep Doo doo, I wish you well in whatever you do, and am glad that you have had some friendly answers

Is that as much you can cope with? I expected more than that from you Oracle. Or is it more to your level.

My grateful thanks to those who have taken the time to reply and given me their opinions. I feel a little more comfortable knowing that this report: http://www.cyprus-mail.com/news/main.php?id=37485&archive=1 could be deemed as scaremongering.

Although I won't be up against underworld pimps or taxi-drivers, I will be offering my idea primarily to the islands' estate agents. That's not to suggest that will be competing with them, more a case of offering a new product to complement their range of services. Not being a particularly good Greek-speaker, I think I will need to investigate the technicalities of employing a Cypriot to undertake the sales aspect, thus leaving me free to provide the actual service.

Whch part of Cyprus are you in?

Paralimni. At least, according to the article, the numbers of attacks are lower in this particular area!
