Driving in Cyprus...

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

Postby DeepDooDoo » Fri Feb 15, 2008 10:23 pm

I lived in Portugal for a number of years before moving to Cyprus. I'm a Brit with a fairly advanced standard of driving (my opinion).

The motoring techniques that I witnessed in Portugal were horrendous, and I was horrified on a daily basis.

Now in Cyprus, I'm just scared out of my skin!

Apologies, but my general observation is that the driving standards are *far* worse in Cyprus than that of Portugal.

Did you visite Portugal? or the south of Italy (Sicily)?

In Portugal is a chaos... all the portugueses with 5 years without a accident are a heroe... ehehehe

Cyprus isn`t soo bad :)

Agree with you gomesilva.

It's all about driving conditions and amount of traffic on the roads that dictates driving styles.

People are the same wherever you go.

However Cypriots do need to go when they need to go ...

Luckily, Cypriots are blessed with multitasking abilities beyond the norm ... so no other nation should try to mimic their style, otherwise you will come a cropper ....

Disagree Phoenix - why else are the roads covered in broken glass?!?! Drivers only think that they can multi-task, hence the chaos!

Believe Cypriots/Cyprus have been voted as the worst drivers in Europe. So what does that tell you?

Ok I never mentioned this before coz Im just soooo embarrased!! I did something really dumb that I would never ever think of doing in my driving life. NO I did not kill any one but there were injuries, I just can't believe I did something like that, I am such a nerd of a driver, never put a foot wrong, till I lived in Cyprus and the first two weeks I was there and all went tits up!!

I use to also curse bad drivers in Cyprus till one day you make a F***k up..

I will never forget that day

Driving in Cyprus is certainly an adventure. The road death statistics for the EU (per 1million population) would confirm this. The worst country is
Lithuania with 223 deaths per miillion. Cyprus is 10th at 112 deaths per million.. The UK is 24th at 51 deaths per million.

So Cyprus is at least twice as dangerous to drive in as the UK. Also the percentage of drivers and passengers wearing seatbelts is much higher in the UK than Cyprus.

My advice for driving in Cyprus? Always expect the unexpected.

I love driving here!

Heaven forbid Cyprus ever becomes like the UK where you can’t fart behind the wheel without getting a ticket these days. :?
