Like:
helpful, recommending good places to eat and shop etc
Good if you are sick - always ready to help you
Kind to animals and generous with donations for good causes
Because a lot are retired they do a lot of unpaid charity work
Don't like:
Moaning about Cypriot culture (why live here then?)
Moaning about money ("its cheaper than that in England" etc)
The way some of them seem to form "packs of ex pats"and take over bars and then dislike "outsiders" going in for a drink!
Racist attitudes toward GC's. As if having a low opinion of GC's will make them look "better" in the eyes of local TC's. (they don't)

I think thats all!!!

hahahaha a lot of what you've said is true tess.. same goes other way around.. they adopt hatred towards the TC's to make themelves welcome among the GC's.. I'm not British, or Cypriot.. I'm an outsider looking in and have to agree with what you've seen, cause i see the same. But it's not just Brits, everyone moans, and no matter how much you say you don't.. we all know you do at one point or another. Some just do it more out in the open than others!

Emm.... I have met many people, I have met many friendly British people, but the ones that were not friendly were because of the following reasons.

1. Polite to Cypriot, can be rood amongst other British speakers
2. Think they are law and order
3. Speak retarded English to Cypriots
4. Adopt shouting and loud behaviour, commonly used in Cyprus
5. Common underprivileged accents from London
6. Moaning about everything! (moaning is scientifically proven not to help anybody, despite the common misconception of it helping you get something off your chest)
7. Speaking about money as if it's godlike, the pinnacle of life
8. Can be arrogant.

The things that I like are as follows:

1. Don't say anything bad about you, unless the hate you
2. If they don't like you they will show it, no fakeness
3. Speak educated, will share knowledge with you
4. They don't take things the wrong way
5. More inclined to get on with people
6. Likes to speak
7. Have excellent business ethics.
8. Can have a general chat without them thinking you want something

I think the list I did was more for British people in general, not only in Cyprus. I don't really mix with many people. British people in England are nice so I suppose their probably similar. Can somebody correct me if I am wrong.

I find this type of thread very useful - we're still planning our move to Cyprus and any insights like this are helpful in understanding how to integrate better. So keep it coming - warts n' all!!

Your not wrong Sega, I was wrong! As you know I went to live in Cyprus and the people that helped me out more were Greeks and I was never that silly competitive girl from UK that thought she can take over, I was my self a quite keep her self to her self kind of girl and I did make alot of friends out there and even now we keep in contact with each other.

Baggieboy if you do go Cyprus just be yourself and never try to change anything.

I miss them sooo much and I appreciate them more now than ever, I wish they can all be here. Again I really apologise for what I wrote, I said some harsh stuff and still feel like crap.

Nobody is wrong Sophia, were all right in our own little way, there is always a reason why some things are said and others aren't, you should never feel bad, something drove you to say those things.

Not directing this to you Sophia, but it is possible to change Cyprus, it does not involve going to somebody else's company and telling him why he/she is wrong but starting your own line of work, and educating the people on how to change things, only with education can things change.

Education does not mean degrees, education means looking at things from a different angle, the right angle. Recently I have been servicing computers, cleaning up any software and optimising them to their full capacity. Anyway, the last 2 computers I have looked at had a copied version of Windows. I told the customers that this is making their life more difficult as they cannot update their Windows. Anyhow, the people proceeded to tell me how much money they saved. After explaining the full picture, they agreed with me (it did take some persuasion), but then told me the Cypriot would never change.

Currently I have been extremely busy and therefore my use in this forum will be limited, nowhere near as much as I previously used it.

In Greece they call the complaints about the locals "Greek bashing", the phrase was coined by an English lady in the English paper Athens News.

The "clubbiness" led the local British community to start the "British Club", in the posh district of Kolonaki. It was active during the 70s and 80s, a place where the Brits went for a good old moan about things in general. Like a British friend observed, places like that remind you of 19th century Kabul, not the thing to have in Athens.

Now that things have modernised in Greece and cars are cheaper than the UK, as are drinks, and you can get your phone line hooked up in a couple of days rather than two years, there is no cause for so much moaning.

But habits die hard. The owner of a famous Athens pub-restaurant politely asks Greek patrons to move out as soon as they have finished their meal. End result is that Greeks will not go to his pub. Predictable reaction in a nation where you can sit in a cafe for hours with just one cup of coffee. The pub landlord thought he was being a cool businessman. Then he realised that he lost a pile of money because he cut out his largest spending customers. Brits can stand at the bar moaning for hours, it was the Greeks that kept the restaurant going. It is still a social taboo here to drink without eating!!!! That a pub landlord did not research local culture to learn this is revealing!
