The Turkish Cypriot Revolt

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby T_C » Thu Feb 14, 2008 3:26 pm

Unfortunately most of the GC's would say "why should we help the tc's get rid of a problem they themselves created to hurt us?"

WHat was in denktash's mind when he started importing your cousins from deep red-neck Turkey?

Change the demographics of this land. Increase the turkish numbers in the north so that they can play their own role when it comes down to negotiating a solution.

...what was in Denktash's mind when he opened the gates?

I have heard two totally conflicting stories about that.

One such story says that Denktash, alarmed by the rising tide of Cypriotness in the TC community at that time, hoped that if he opened the gates, GC fanatics would pour in and commit acts of violence, thus teaching his own community a good lesson.

A totally confliciting story I have heard from left-wing Turkish Cypriot activitists is that the left was preparing to stage a mass action in which large numbers of people would simultanously advance on the green line armed with the necessary tools and dismantle border. The Turkish military command approached Denktash and told him that they would be powerless to stop this mass action from taking place, and so urged him to open the gates to prevent this action from being launched.

Just conveying what I have heard.

...the reasons for his act are shrouded in mystery, that much is true.

I believe that he, like Makarios realised the value of an independent State, for Cypriots. And being a Patriot, he chose his Cypriotness above his Turkishness, in the end.

This is the Rauf Denktash who said in a speech he made in Ankara in 1995:

"There are neither Turkish Cypriots, nor Greek Cypriots, nor Cypriots. Be sure not to ask us, ‘Are you Cypriot?’ This could be interpreted as an insult and could result in misunderstandings. The reason? The reason is that there is only one Cypriot being living in Cyprus; this is the Cyprus donkey."

I see this posted often and don't understand the value of it other than to remind me that Denkash had an identity problem.

Any notion that ALL Cypriots are "bastardized foreigners" is utter crap without a valid explanation as to what happened to the Cypriots who were here long before the Greek influence emerged; the first traces of Cypriots go back to 8,000BC.

...do you doubt this, at the moment? It is not a difficult conclusion with the debate that is going on right now, and the reactions to them that are most prevalent. However things change, people change, evidence of that is found in the USA, where a black man runs for President, ...where a short while ago they hung from trees.

...also reading between the lines, it is a criticism of all Cypriots, rather than a specific population of them.

Not as a Turk, or against a Greek adversary, as a Patriot , he spoke for all of us. (again).

It is still an open question though about what kind of legacy that Rauf Denktash leaves to the Turkish Cypriot people once he passes on...
