Connecting upstairs & downstairs comps with CYTA modem

Postby milliemoo » Mon Feb 11, 2008 2:08 pm

A friend is at last getting internet next week and needs advice on what to ask CYTA when they set it up.

Her proposed set up is:
Desktop upstairs and Laptop downstairs.
Going to buy one (or two?) usb wireless adaptor dongles to make both comps wireless

My questions are:-

1) assuming the primary phone/adsl socket is downstairs - will the upstairs Desktop pick up the signal from the downstairs Laptop or from the CYTA modem?
A friend recently had her broadband installed and it connects to her desktop but she can also use her laptop (which has a usb wireless dongle) to connect to the internet. No separate wireless router but i have heard that many people have to buy one to get the 2 comps connected to the internet at the same time.

2) do they have to ask the engineer to enable wireless on the CYTA modem?

3) can they ask for the primary phone/adsl socket to be rewired or changed to upstairs where the main computer is?

Thanks

You can’t guarantee if the wireless will work between floors until you try it. The large amount of reinforced concrete in typical Cypriot built homes absorbs the wireless signal and it may or may not work.

To be honest I’d use HomePlug networking through the house mains wiring unless you really have a need to wander around with one of the PCs.

Get CYTA to install the DSL modem next to the desktop (wired) and if the laptop has wireless support then just push the little button in the center of the Speedtouch modem to enable wireless support; the “WLAN” led should come on. The laptop should easily connect if within range. As for the range you’ll have to wait and see.

Thanks for info. Thats why we thought if we could have the primary upstairs then at least we could move around with the laptop to hopefully find a signal, whereas if other way round we cant. can we ask cyta engineer to do this?

The HomePlug networking sounds a brilliant idea! Thanks.

Just for clarification and my curiosity - if the cyta modem is not wireless enabled can, in theory, the two comps pick up internet from each other if both are wireless?

Thanks again

The Cyta modem will plug into any phone socket in the house... other sockets with 'phones in will need a filter on them, the engineer will ask how many you need.

No problem.

Basically yes.
You will need two network adapters on the one sharing the internet connection. That is, let's say you have your desktop wired and also has another wireless network adapter on it, with which will connect with the wireless laptop.

Internet Connection Sharing, that is.

I'm sure the CYTA tech will be happy to answer your queries and assist so have your laptop nearby upstairs when he comes and ask him to check if that's connecting too but wireless.

This is a costly solution and not suitable/required for the simple 1pc & 1 laptop arrangement you mentioned.

Your question is tricky... One could setup a wireless network between the two machines and then one of them shares its internet but that would involve a whole range of things.

Thanks all for the replies. Makes things a bit clearer now.

Yes, ICS and networking can be a pain, but both are XP which isnt quite so bad but the solution of installation upstairs and enabling the wireless on the cyta modem with the kind help of the engineer  seems to be the way to go.

Thanks again all.

Dont use that stupid modem..get yourself a nice netgear or 3com (not Linksys) Wireless router and setup a wireless network. If you need to extend your range you can get an extra range extender but i dont think u will need one.
Usb dongles are not that powerful with Wireless networking, try PCMCIA ones...

:? And who is going to pay for all this gear or did you assume his budget is limitless?
