MEPs warn against linking Turkey’s accession course to Cyprus problem
MEMBERS of the European Parliament said on Friday that linking Turkey’s EU accession to the Cyprus issue could slow down the chances for a solution.
Chairman of the High Level Contact Group in the European Parliament for relations with the Turkish Cypriot community, Françoise Grossetête said the Cyprus problem was a European question but cautioned on an actual link to Turkey.Speaking at a news conference for the visiting delegation from the Bureau of the EPP-ED Group in the European Parliament, Grossetête said if a settlement was not found soon, the Greek Cypriots could be in danger of becoming a minority, due to the continuing influx of Turkish settlers to the north.
However, linking the Cyprus issue and Turkey’s accession was not the answer, as it could slow down efforts for a solution, she said.
The job of the EPP-ED contact group was to foster closer relations between the two communities Grossetête said.
The group held a two-day meeting on the island this week.
Chairman of the EPP-ED Group Joseph Daul talked about the mushrooming of illegal immigration to Cyprus, and said the island could not handle the problem on its own and needed more help from the EU.
The visit by the EPP-ED, with which right-wing DISY is affiliated, sparked an election row on Thursday when George Lillikas, the spokesman for presidential candidate Tassos Papadopoulos, accused DISY of “bringing foreigners to tell Cypriots what to do”. In response, DISY officials accused the former foreign minister of “xenophobia”.
