sorry, not meaning to offend anyone, but that is my take on why the Cypriots are that way. another century or two and things should be alot different. who knows, now that you are part of the EU, it may be a few gernerations instead of a few centuries.

SOrry GG but in the summer this island of 700k is outnumbered by 2.2 million I'd say thats hardly isolation. Cypriots also have one of the highest ratios of indicidual travel (to other countries)
COmpare that with Jesusland USA Lafayete Indiana where the last stranger to waltz through town was feathered and tarred.

(just in case you were feeling weird about no one jumping down your throat.....you may now go about your business and consider your throat jumped.)

i was afraid it would catch all hell.

i am reminded of an entry in my great grandmother's journal, posted in the early 1900's (circa 1922?) when she saw an aeroplane for the first time. all the town had come out to see this intresting new invention and meet the pilot. at the end of the entry, she wrote "I wonder if the aeroplane will ever be a suitable means of travel."

the invention of air travel certainly opens CY up to the rest of the world.

omg     within reason though.

As hard as it sounds, I will agree with you!

My question is...

When will the parents be proud to say that their girls are out spreading it too?

There is some truth in what you say GG. Cyprus is a tad Insular and everyone 'know' everybody elses business - well almost. I have heard said in the same family, " oh yeah, my girl is a good girl", then you hear them saying, " oh yeah, my boy is out spreading his seed. Thats my boy". The hypocrisy of it all. Times are changing though. The girls are catching up. (slowly)

Like What?

Why do we control each others life. Why the parents have so much control over their children.
Over their marriage.
Over their grand kids.

The adults try to control their parents. Their brothers their sisters.

and finally why the girls don't have the freedom to say this is my boyfriend. why can't they just move in with someone they love or want to have fun with.

Oooopppsss sorry, I thought we were in Europe.

Now, on a serious note, do girls have to be virgins?

Let us discuss this issue, only serious talkers please.

ready?

All Cypriots are different, not all are the same however as you pointed out, some have similar characteristics.

Some parents give their children their freedom at a young age until the kids make a pigs ear of it. The parents then forcefully take control and fear to ever let go.

With grandparents I think it's different. Mine too are very controlling. It has something to do with boredom and feeling constructive and expiry date. Some think that their usefulness is the thing that is keeping them alive.

Referring to virgins, it's a personal thing. Virginity should never be discussed to anybody, apart from your partner. If you're a virgin it's not bad. However I assure you Cypriot girls in Cyprus aren't all virgins. Personally I don't mind whether she is or isn't, obviously I don't want her thinking of her ex in either outcome.

Consider this, say one married a virgin but she kept showing an interest in other men, how would that make him feel? Not good, virginity is not the be all and end all of any relationship.

On the point of girls not saying "here is my boyfriend", initially you would believe that this is because of the parents, to some it might be. Cyprus is not how it use to be, things have changed. It's more to do having their options open for the next guy(sounds terrible, I know). Cyprus is a fairly small place with many small minded people, other's knowing your business would not help. Some might twist your situation and spread rumours about you. Being labelled as somebodies woman won't help you.

There are different places in Cyprus with different mentalities. In the village it's more to do with their parents rather than the next guy. They have a tendency to get married young, or stay unmarried forever. Therefore if the parents understand that their daughter is seeing somebody you can expect her to be married fairly sharpish.

I can only speak about the ones I know, I know of number of girls in Cyprus (mostly family friends), some living in the village and others in the city. They have all had boyfriends from a young age, all of which have been open about it to their parents. The attitude in Cyprus has changed.

But like I said you will often find the girls that have had their rights/freedom taken away from them have done something in the past that gives their parents the idea that they cannot be trusted.

Are you talking about TC or GC girls, or both. My answer was for GC girls, for what it's worth.

I think it is lovely that parents still want their daughters to be both respectable and respected. It is a great pity that the British girls have turned into booze swilling, immoral old slappers, who are a disgrace to their parents and their sex and country.I deplore the state of teenagers in the UK and it looks like the Cypriot teenagers(mostly male) seem to be turning into them too.(motorbikes and cars driven at mad speed whilst under the influence of drink/drugs.) A lovely old Cypriot in Peyia said to me"our young have no respect for their parents now, what do we do?",I thought it was very sad.

no offence, but you must be of the old mind

FREEDOM

once you are an adult you should be free...no one should control your life, whether you are male or female...

with freedom comes responsibility, you cannot have both. For every action there is a reaction. The freedom to make others miserable is not a right.I may be old fashioned, but I believe in mutual respect and decency, something people today sadly lack.
