Cypriot ID -can i use it instead of passport between UK- CY?

Postby nemski » Wed Feb 06, 2008 8:07 pm

i am british-cypriot from london, but my Cyprus ID states I am british, because of course- in this chauvinistic country- you are only cypriot if your father is!
Anyway my British passport is about to expire and im travelling to the UK next week, anyone know if I can use my Cypriot ID coming back, even though it says im British????
Or how to find out, dont want to end up stranded at airport with 3 yr old son!

I theory you should have no problem, after all, the European ID is suppose to work across European countries (including Cyprus).

However, the British government are strict when it comes to immigration and in all circumstances they prefer a passport instead of an ID card.

If your ID card is one of the newer models (on hard plastic with a hologram of a buffalo) then it is likely that you won't have a problem. If on the other hand your ID card is one of the older paper ones, I wouldn't bet on your chances.

It theory you should no problem, but the UK have adopted their own rules when it comes to immigration that somewhat divert from the rest of Europe. If in doubt you can ring up the airport or airlines and see what they say. Legally you should have no problem.

Ok I'll give you my experience and that of a couple of others and you can decide later if it's going to work.

I went back to the UK for a couple of months last year ~ I used the ID card to leave at larnaca airport and arrive at heathrow .

No problem in leaving larnaca and the immigration at heathrow was fine with the ID card to get in the UK ~ the only little problem was the immigration guy had to input the card details manually instead of scanning a passport as he would normally do .

Whilst I was in the UK I took a trip to Italy ~ I used my card to exit and arrive at gatwick and enter and depart Italy via Naples both journey's posed no problem BUT I've heard others have had problems getting the ID card accepted in Italy

As you are probably aware rules change to suit the weather or the mood of the immigration officer you see ~ although I haven't had any problems personally I know a number of people that have been refused exit from Cyprus or entry from the UK at Larnaca because they tried to use the card ~~ luckily they also had their passports as well as it looked like the ID card would not be accepted ~~ one immigration official commented to one of my friends that as he had British nationality on his ID and was obviously not Cypriot he was not entitled to use the card for anything other than identification within Cyprus itself and without exception not to be used instead of a passport .

So from my experience and that of others it seems like it's pot luck or a definite no .

Good luck

In the UK yes you are correct ~ it seems the problem is at this end which is ironically the country issuing the card and not respecting the validity of their own card as it's been issued to a foreigner

From personal experience too...you will not have any problem my mum travel without any passport but withe her ID and we ask since she panic when she realized that her passport expired. Well when we asked they said that if you are a member of the EU and you are traveling in an EU country you wont have any problem with the ID but in other circumstances you might do face some problems.
