The newly formed Cyprus Peace Platform has staged an action in front of the Presidential Palace protesting President Mehmet Ali Talat for his statement that the unification of the island is not an `utterance of God”.
In a statement during the action, the Cyprus Turkish Teachers’ Union General Secretary Sener Elcil said that the organizations forming the Platform have been struggling for the reunification of Cyprus and to bring peace to the country.
Reading out a statement on behalf of the Platform, Mr Elcil said all Cypriots have been suffering from the continuation of the Cyprus problem, which he said, was created by secessionism, the struggle for power and outside interference.
Claiming that the recent statements issued by President Talat and his spokesperson Erçakıca showed that they are far from a federal solution, he accused the President of acting as-if he is in support of a solution, while working for the continuation of the problem.
ERCAKICA RESPONDED TO THE PROTEST ACTION
The Presidential Spokesman Hasan Ercakica has defended the remark made by President Mehmet Ali Talat that the unification of the island is not God’s wish, stating that the expression was used only to draw attention to other alternatives which could be considered if a new initiative expected to be launched later in the year, failed.
Mr Ercakica’s words came in response to a protest action held in front of the Presidential Palace this morning by the Cyprus Peace Platform.
The Presidential spokesman complained various circles had deliberately left out parts of the President’s statement and had only used parts of his words which served their interests.
“The complete version of the President’s words was that unification is not a God’s wish. We are searching for a solution to bring happiness to the people. Our priority is a united Cyprus”, he said.
He stated that the TRNC Leadership had made it clear to the international community that it would not oppose any a formula which envisages reunification of the island on the basis of the political equality of two founding states, but pointed out that this message was failing to get through to some circles within the country.
