There is an easier solution which would also pay for any imported water needed by Cyprus.Fine anybody using a hosepipe £500 each time.Ban the use of water for swimming pools and carwashes. The most obvious one is use what surrounds Cyprus,it is relatively free.

Well, seawater is free but it costs loads in terms of energy and pollution to turn it into potable water.

The point that I (and Phoenix) am trying to make is that there is plenty of water here already, just sitting doing nothing.

Moreover, imagine if we had no more rain and the water ran out in say three months. How many more properties will be completed in that time and be ‘filled-up’ with water that is unusable for those of us that really need it?

Hey that's the developers for you, apparently these houses are in great demand.
Re:sea water and energy, that has been an argument for too long.Israel produces enough water from the sea with minimal energy usage, solar power.
Cyprus has been complacent where water is concerned, they have had years to sought out a solution, but have preferred to sit on their hands.

Oh I agree with you entirely and believe that there must be enough solar energy here to turn seawater into fresh, drinking water. Unfortunately as you say it takes some effort and planning to get such a project up-and-running. Something which Cyprus seems woefully incompetent at…

So the only short-term solution is an electric powered desalination facility… crazy really.

Here's one for you.I have a Cypriot collegue, who has a fantastic house overlooking Limassol. Two acres of gardens,50 metre swimming pool.He has never learnt to swim, his family do not swim, hence the pool is never used. The garden is on a sprinkler system which comes on every night for two hours. As you can imagine the place is an oasis, but how much water does he use?

Hi Grump
Well done but now don't just talk the talk, we need you to walk the walk! What are your ongoing plans with this?

For 15000 sterling you can get a solar powered deaslinator that prodcues over 5 tonnes of water daily. If a neighborhood bands together and buys a larger capacity model the cost is even less per cubic meter.

5 tonnes is what a 200 sq. meter house uses in two months of normal use.

So there is no water shortage. There is a brains shortage.

Ongoing plans eh?

Phoenix and I are to be elected King and Queen of Cyprus and then we will get down to action… Oh, and then we’ll sort the water thing out.

More seriously, the e-mail addy for the water development department is: -

[email protected]

And I guess we could also e-mail the Cyprus Mail and Cyprus Weekly plus some of our Greek speaking members could e-mail the other papers.

What thinks you?
