Christofias outlines his ‘10+1’ ways to solve the Cyprus pro

Postby paliometoxo » Tue Feb 05, 2008 5:27 pm

AKEL candidate Demetris Christofias yesterday issued his ‘10+1’ pledges to move the Cyprus problem forward if he is elected president later this month.

Christofias said he didn’t have a magic wand that could solve all of the problems but promised a major initiative on the Cyprus question if he was elected.

The 11 pledges include a direct initiative from the Greek Cypriot side on the basis of the stalled July 8, 2006 agreement far removed from dead-end policies.

He also wants to bombard the Turkish Cypriots with friendship aiming at invigorating the fading will for a solution.

Christofias also pledged to upgrade and expand the National Council, the body that advises the President on the Cyprus issue, and to work for the unity of the political parties that participate.

Perseverance was another word he used then it came to pursuing a solution on a bi-zonal bi-communal federation that would ensure the right of refugees to return.

He would also persevere in pursuing a solution based on the EU charter and UN resolutions and international conventions. Cyprus also needed to exploit Turkey’s EU ambitions, he said.
“We will fight … not to give Turkey 37 per cent of our island,” he said.

Christofias dismissed statements by Tassos Papadopoulos’ campaign camp that the incumbent was best placed to go forward with the July 8 agreement and that the election of Christofias would mean “the foreigners” would bring back the Annan plan.

“Is that because they would be afraid of Mr Papadopoulos if they see in him front of them?” he said. He also wondered, he said, if Papadopoulos was best to take the July 8 agreement forward, why it has gone nowhere in 18 months.

The difference between him and Papadopoulos was that the President was focusing on preventing recognition of the north, while he would be focusing on a solution

looks like this race will be very close one even flying cypriots to cyprus to help this will be intresting to see who wins

From the list above VP it seems that they have less a clue about this than they do with defining a BBF system.....I do hope I am wrong though because he seems to be the only hope......
