Moving to Cyprus (Help & Skills Please)

Postby Dil & Darren » Mon Feb 04, 2008 5:22 pm

Hi To All,

We are brand new on here so please be gentle !!

We found this site a short time ago and have been reading the posts in general with assorted reactions ranging from grins :lol: to aw my gawd :shock: ...!!!

But never the less we have registered and are duly saying a big hi to all :)

We are hoping to be able to move to Cyprus at a point yet to be determined but in the next 1-4 years. We have looked at a few properties over the last few years but wondered if anyone can give us the non sales pitch reality ?? We really like the Famagusta region but are still not 100% help and general feed back would great as would guidance on the following;

1) Average running costs on a 2/3 bed semi/detached i.e. CT,Elec,Tel,Sat tv etc.
2) We are hoping for semi-retirement but would like to keep busy and maintain a small income are there any specific skills that would enable us to get part time work easier. We wiil be looking to learn language to at least basic level if not more by the time of living.
3) Any pitfalls to avoid ? Tips to learn by and so on ..?

Thanks for reading weather in Great Yarmouth at present is a very chilly 5 c with wind .......

Property market here is oversaturated, and due for a correction anytime now.

Buy resale rather than offplan, as you will not get the title deeds for a long time with most newbuilds, and the building process can be painful

it's a good idea to learn the language and try and mix with local people.

So many brits come out here and live in expat enclaves, then they wonder why the locals see them as strangers or 'foreigners'

In the UK, english people do not like enclaves of foreigners who speak their own tongue and do not try and assimilate, and it is no different here

so yeah try and learn the language and at least show respect for local customs etc
