The best guess for GC Forces are that the Greek Cypriot National Guard has 10,000+ soldiers on active duty, with 80,000 to 100,000 reserves. These forces are supplemented by about 1,000 Greek mainland troops and 1,300 Greek mainland officers.

The CIA's World Factbook says that there are 184,352 males aged between 18-49 so, in theory, available for militar service.

Taking the total forces available to the GCs from the first set of numbers, there seem to be around 100,000. The conventional ratio of attackers/defenders to have defeat/victory is 3:1 in the attackers favour. The Turkish Army numbers (more than 30,000 but less than 40,000) would seem to be around this magic ratio.

Naturally quality of soldiers and their equipment count, but that's a road I'll leave others to go down.

1) In regular troops you outnumber the national guard 4-1
2) You also outnumber by at least 4-1 on Tanks, Artillery and missiles
3) You have an airforce we do not.
4) Half of our reservists won't turn up
5) Talat can pick up the phone and call his buddy erdogan nd request another 200,000 regular troops a-n-y-t-i-m-e he wants.

WHile we are honoured that you feel threatened by us enough to maintain such force on the island, we are somehow not buying the excuse.

i think it is clear what the views of turkey are over cyprus....as always agressive....why? if the Turkish Cypriots really wanted protection,..,.why not have a 1:1 ration of troops... why 3 times as much? i think the answer to the questions is clear :

The aggressiveness of Turkey and its expansionist aspirations against Cyprus

• Ensevaled and occupied the northern part of
• Removed the Greek population
• Transfer illegal Turkish settlers who have distorted the demographic composition of the island
• It prevents the discovery of the missing persons
• It destroyed the cultural heritage of the Greeks of Cyprus
• Changed the Greek toponymy
• illegally seizes property of Greeks in Cyprus
• Preserves since 1974 strong military force in an aggressive anti-free territories
• systematically violates the sea and airspace of Cyprus with:
-- Military Exercises
-- Exercises Research Rescue
-- Flights of Martial Aircraft
-- War ship

so bottom line is what the TC'S go on about protection etc etc,,is a load of BS...

The reason why there are 40,000 Turkish troops in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is very clear pal, to keep the likes of you, Kiefeas, Piratis , Get Real and not to forget the little mad and utterly racist puppet master "phoenix" in your places so that you do not dare to attempt to genocide us Turkish Cypriots again for your ENOSIS dream.

I do think that you are right about the perception of "folks" with regard to the large number of Turkish troops in Northern Cyprus, particularly given the strike capability of the Turkish Air Force, in the event of any potential "hostilities".

This presence is historic ( It might have been the intention of Turkey to take the whole island and ensure that the 1960 constitution was re-implemented).

It might also be that once this large number of troops was here that the Generals decided to stay in order to "influence" local politics.

None of the above is really reason enough, but I do feel that given the temprament of of "hot blooded" Mediterranean "folk" any withdrawal might appear to be a "climb down" from a military point of view.

The British forces number approx. 3,000 on the island.

Hi, Suetoniuspaulinus (interesting name). Even though I'm pro-TRNC independence, I don't think highly of such a large amount of Turkish troops stationed in the north of Cyprus, but I can see your point about a perceived 'climb-down' should a large portion of Turkish forces be withdrawn. The addage 'give and inch and they'll take a mile' is probably on the minds of the Turkish General Staff. Influencing TRNC politics by their presence is another concern. It all makes a mockery of the 1983 UDI. Self-determination under those circumstances is rather problematical.

By the way, any settlement should also involve the British ceding the SBA's.

I too favour an independent, Internationally recognised TRNC, but I'm not too sure about the SBA's. Some kind of deal was struck by Tony Blair before accession of RoC to EU. Befopre RoC was admitted to that hallowed organisation it was agreed that the SBA's would remain "Sovereign".

Actually , in a truly independent TRNC, it wouldn't really matter that much.
