The National Anthem

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

The National Anthem

Postby Expatkiwi » Sun Feb 03, 2008 6:07 pm

When the thread about the flags diverted briefly into the National Anthems used by both RoCy and TRNC, I thought it worth opeing a thread on this issue. My stance - recognition of the north - is partly based on the fact that the RoCy uses the National Anthem of Greece. It's all very well using the neutralist flag and arms of RoCy, but using the anthem of another country makes a mockery of the symbolism of the flag and arms. It still shows the allegiance of the RoCy to Greece, thus showing that the enosis dream is still alive.

And yes, I know that the TRNC uses the national anthem of Turkey and can thus be interpreted similarly. I personally have no prejudices against either pice per se. both anthems are quite stirring, but they belong to Greece and Turkey.

And anyone who isn't deaf who hears the Cypriot anthem is going to say: These people aren't Cypriot, therse people are Greek! Expatkiwi makes a good point. As long as Cyprus uses the Greek National Anthem, it is singing out that it is loyal first to Athens, not Nicosia. It needs to be changed.

The flag and arms currently used by RoCy are adequate, given their neutral symbolism. Still, what should the anthem be changed to? Should there be words? If so, in which language? Whatever is chosen, it cannot bear any resemblence to either the Greek or Turkish anthems. Showing favoritism to either side is a recipie for trouble.

Only goes to show how Greek the south still is, so all this talk of we are all Cypriots is a load of bullshit.
