NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) - Nine British soldiers were charged in connection with a brawl that left one soldier in the hospital with a skull fracture in a coastal Cypriot resort, officials said Sunday.
Eight of the soldiers appeared briefly at a police station in Ayia Napa, where all nine were formally charged.

The charges included
causing grievous bodily harm, causing malicious damage and disturbing the peace, Cypriot police said.
The soldier in the hospital was being treated for head injuries, which were not life threatening, British Bases spokesman Dennis Barnes said. Another four soldiers and two Cypriots had also been treated for minor injuries.
It was unclear what triggered the fight in the early hours of Saturday, which spilled over into a bar that sustained ¤5,000 (US$7,400) worth of damage.

The soldiers _ part of the 2nd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Fusiliers _ had been out celebrating their last pay day before their tour on Cyprus ended, Barnes said. The battalion has been stationed for two years on the Mediterranean island, and has seen action in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Barnes said the soldiers had been confined to barracks pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation. Their identities and ranks have not been released.

Barnes said the nine could face disciplinary action if found to have disobeyed orders in going to the bar, which is located in an area of Ayia Napa declared off limits to British servicemen and women since three troops were jailed for the 1994 rape and murder of a Danish tour guide near the resort.

Britain retained two military bases in Cyprus after the island gained independence in 1960.

Regretfully , without even seeing evidence as to who started the fight , I'm inclined to put it down to the great British decease , too much bloody alcohol.

According to the sunday-mail (the cyprus version), they chased someone who ran inside this bar. When they got in they sarted to smash the place up. Tables chairs, bottles etc. (not my words but the press).

The owner and a few friends/customers tried to stop them, but were attacked and eventually ran out leaving the squaddies to continue smashing. They called the police and that was that.

See the sunday mail for further info.

Over exuberance coupled with a certain degree of contempt for the regulation that forbids those young soldiers to enjoy themselves in a certain area of Agia Napa (because of an incident that occured well over a decade ago) is probably the reason for what took place there.

The troops were probably excited at the prospect of returning to their homeland after serving much time in the areas of conflict abroad.

They more than likely attracted some criticism for their involvement in an unpopular deployment in Iraq and responded in the manner they are trained for, to fight.

The responsibility for their deployment is not attributable to them, they are obliged to follow the orders of those that command them.

Hopefully none of the combatants were seriously hurt and the matter can be dealt with in a manner which will not discredit any one of those involved.

There is trouble enough in the world, I am sure a good toe to toe contest is good for any man, soldier or otherwise, God Bless them all.

It wouldn't surprise me (or anyone else for that matter) if certain young ladies were somehow the source of the uprising, they usually are. (Thank God !)

Too true paliometaxo but it seems that whether its fighting , stealing , burglary or whatever ,the usual common factor seems to be the 'British Connection' Sad but true
