Spam Problem

Postby Sega » Sat Feb 02, 2008 8:43 pm

Hi all,

I have been having a small problem with spam now. I've been receiving a suspicious email for about a week now and I am greatly concerned.

It is impersonating eBay, telling me to log onto the website. The linked site on the email is different to what the link is. I forwarded the message to [email protected] and they confirm my thoughts.

The trouble is I will have to change my email address. Does anybody have any advice for me. I don't want to format my PC, I scanned it for viruses and I it returned with nothing. I am somewhat hazy to what the problem is.

Has anybody experienced such problems, the email looks genuine, but it's not.

You can block the offending sender ~ they can send as many emails as they won't get to go and will be sent back undelivered.

Of course you will have to do this with each individual sender but it does work .

Personally I just ignore and delete them ~ ebay in particular sends messages via it's own web site and as far as banks etc go always access them via their own sites and never through a link in a email.

Remember the golden rule ~ never access sites via a link in your mail !

These people are clever, they keep using different providers. Even if you block it they will still be coming. I am thinking of changing my email, not really what I want to do but I think it leaves me with no choice. To be 100% certain I might have to do a format, I don't really want to this either. It should take me around a full day if not more.

This should guarantee no more spam, the trouble is because I am running another OS known as X P 64-bit I can't install most of the software that was used to protect my computer. So I seriously don't know what to do. Even if I install XP64 most of the software will not run. I used to use a program known as K9 Web Protection, worked wonders! But not for 64-bit. But I have to have 64-bit because I have over 30GB RAM. :-(

If anybody knows any good programs which work on 64-bit OS please do tell.

Spam, phishing and other scam attempts are a fact of life on the net. So what if you do change your email, it won't stop, other scammers will find you. IMHO the blocking advice given above seems an easier option.

I agree sounds way easier, I am using Thunderbird as my email client and unfortunately there is no blocking option, it can only redirect it to another folder, which sucks. I emailed the provider of the email, and they told me the only way to block it was to use my email client. Evidently this is not working for me.

Sorry Sega don't know anything about Thunderbird, but if it will redirect to another folder, then get it to do so and call that folder "trash" or "junk" and empty it regularly.

It seems like you more tolerant of spam that I am. I prefer never to have it in the first place. I am going to explore my options and see what I can do. I think there is an option with my provider to use something called white mail, where you filters out what it thinks is spam.

Formatting your HD will not cut down on spam as they are just using your email addy to send them. Get yourself a junk email address, just send your real one to folk you trust. In your real email addy put something in the middle which a human will know is crap and delete, eg [email protected] (sorry if there is a jim button at aol).

To be honest sega even if you change your email it won't be long before the spam catches up with you eventually and you will be back to square one .

I'm firmly convinced that a greater proportion of my spam started after ordering something from play.com ~ if it wasn't it was a hell of a coincidence.

As I said before I just ignore it and empty the trash at the end of the week .

At least I know my emails working
