So far 2008 has not started too well for Turkey. She was told "No way Jose" to her EU membership by Germany and France. Turkey's stock market is already down 25% this year. I know most International markets are down, but no where near to 25%. Lets see what will happen if Turkey turns down "Privileged Membership" that's been offered by the EU members to Turkey, providing of course, that the RoC goes along with that idea and does not use her VETO power. What will happen to Turkey's stock market then. To add more pressure on Turkeys economy, will be the prospect of the Democrats taking the White House in November of this year. Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama makes no difference, the Armenian Genocide and the Occupation of Cyprus, along with issues with the Kurds, will all be brought to center stage. I have a feeling Turkey will have her hands full, to be any use to fighting for anything that will be any benefit to the "TRNC". Turkey will only be able to fight her own battles.....maybe.!!

So far in 2008 we have seen a constitutional amendment in Turkey over ladies head scarves, drop in the stock market, Erdogan saying Cyprus and Kossovo are not similar, (so nixing all hopes of this much touted independence), France and Germany agreeing on special status and not membership for Turkey. Then there was the closing of the Syria Famagusta ferry route.

Cyprus joined the Eurozone and has the Euro on January 1.

Turkey is not ready for the EU nor is the EU ready for Turkey in 20+ years time a new developed Turkey may not have the need for the EU. The EU was used by the GCs as a leverage but it back fired as they slowing are realizing that it dont work that way and a few little self gratifying victoires here and there will not change anything in the grand scheme when it comes to the Cyprus issue.

The only was to solve this problem is to creat a level playing field where everyone can decide where they wish to reside and under which administration they will to live.
