Cyprus settles dispute with EU over aid to Turkish Cypriots

Cyprus has decided to withdraw its appeal for the annulment of eight tenders within the framework of an European Union (EU) financial aid package for the Turkish Cypriot community, the government spokesman announced on Tuesday.

The Cypriot government had filed cases with the Court of First Instance at the European Court of Justice over the involvement of Turkish Cypriot 'state' organs in tenders for projects under the 259 million financial aid package.

The dispute, which would halt all EU-financed projects contracted so far for Turkish Cypriot community should Nicosia win the appeal, was settled after the European Commission agreed to revise some wording that Cypriot government fears would "constitute recognition of a separate state entity on the island," said government spokesman Stephanos Stephanou.

As a result, the Cypriot government made the decision to withdraw the appeal "to facilitate the allocation of financial aid to the Turkish Cypriot community," he said.

The projects financed by the EU includes a waste management project, a feasibility study for the rehabilitation of a copper mine, financial support for the Committee for Missing Persons, traffic safety management and demining in the buffer zone.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey militarily intervened and occupied the north of the island following a coup by a group of Greek officers.

In 1983, the Turkish Cypriot authorities declared breakaway and set up "the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus," which is recognized only by Turkey.

The Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities have just agreed to revive the long-stalled peace talks earlier this year in a new effort to reunify the island.

what were the words

Smile an everlasting smile,
A smile could bring you near to me
Don't ever let me find you gone
'Cause that would bring a tear to me

This world has lost it's glory,
Let's start a brand new story now, my love
Right now there'll be no other time
And I can show you how, my love

Talk in everlasting words
And dedicate them all to me
And I will give you all my life
I'm here if you should call to me

You think that I don't even mean
A single word I say
It's only words, and words are all I have
To take your heart away

In case it escaped your notice the article refers to Turkish Cypriots NOT TO YOU MATE !!

miltiades this is another goodwill gesture me thinks from Christofiyas, so far for me he has taken all the right steps, ı ony hope he does not get cold feet when agreeing as possible solution, bold moves are necessary to rattle the TCs and Turks into action so as to clinch a deal and he may just be the man for the job.

The EU wording that has changed describes how the aid is going to the northern part of the Republic of Cyprus where the government is currently not exercising full effective control.

A bit like we have a part of the island were the people have temporarily revolted.

I am glad the aid is getting through though.

VP , my quick response to Pauul who I see as NOT a Turkish Cypriot was not in any way critical of the EU aid getting through to the T/Cs. I'm all for any action that our people will benefit from. Pauul and the likes of him are contributing sweet fa to the benefit of our people. I believe they should do the honourable deed and leave the shores of Cyprus for the greener pastures of Turkey and Greece taking with them their foreign emblems under which so many atrocities were committed against the Cypriot people. I have no time for parasites that use our island while at the same time have their heads deeply embedded in their respective motherlands' arses.
The EU aid is for the benefit of the Turkish Cypriot people alone.

miltiades aren't you being rather short sighted where globalization is the norm even the EU supports freedom of movement and settlement anywhere in the EU. People like Paul live here in harmony with us, we have no problems with them and they do contribute to our economy as they are consumers and tax payers. Their past may be chequered but its us who fell for their divide and rule tactics its always easier to blame someone else than face your own demons and compromise towards a solution.

The cat amongst the pigeons Halil...the cat amongst the pigeons. Lets see if the TC side reject this on account of harsh wording of the north by the EU. Lets see whats important to Talat..his people's welfare, much needed aid and the solution of the problem or the EU telling him he can't pretend to be president anymore.
