But I find it impossible to believe that there are in Cyprus today politicians who are so naïve to believe there is even one chance in a million for the Greek Cypriots to secure a settlement that is significantly better than the settlement outlined in the Annan plan. On the contrary, the reality shows that the best we could hope for would be to secure some limited improvements on a few issues.
Cyprus settles dispute with EU over aid to Turkish Cypriots
Cyprus has decided to withdraw its appeal for the annulment of eight tenders within the framework of an European Union (EU) financial aid package for the Turkish Cypriot community, the government spokesman announced on Tuesday.
The Cypriot government had filed cases with the Court of First Instance at the European Court of Justice over the involvement of Turkish Cypriot 'state' organs in tenders for projects under the 259 million financial aid package.
The dispute, which would halt all EU-financed projects contracted so far for Turkish Cypriot community should Nicosia win the appeal, was settled after the European Commission agreed to revise some wording that Cypriot government fears would "constitute recognition of a separate state entity on the island," said government spokesman Stephanos Stephanou.
As a result, the Cypriot government made the decision to withdraw the appeal "to facilitate the allocation of financial aid to the Turkish Cypriot community," he said.
The projects financed by the EU includes a waste management project, a feasibility study for the rehabilitation of a copper mine, financial support for the Committee for Missing Persons, traffic safety management and demining in the buffer zone.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey militarily intervened and occupied the north of the island following a coup by a group of Greek officers.
In 1983, the Turkish Cypriot authorities declared breakaway and set up "the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus," which is recognized only by Turkey.
The Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities have just agreed to revive the long-stalled peace talks earlier this year in a new effort to reunify the island.
