Treating everything as a bargaining chip is pure bazaar mentality and well represented in some of the comments above.

One way or another Famagusta will be returned because it is a golden goose. The GCs will want to rebuild it, the GC banks will provide the finance and TCs will reap the golden eggs.

Concrete buildings left unattended and exposed to sea air are structurally useless after 30 years. The whole town will have to be demolished and rebuilt. It is a huge civil engineering project and the majority of the building contractors and workmen will be TCs, the south does not have the manpower to rebuild the place alone.

Now figure the finances- 40 000 population equals 10 000 dwellings= 1000 000 square meters of housing, at 2000 Euros per meter equals 2 BILLION for housing alone, now add hotels, roads, infrastructure and you come to some 5 BILLION plus. The biggest project in the history of Cyprus. Once the business of selling stolen GC land and rinky dink "holiday villas" grinds to a halt the contractors of the north will see the light.

How about the thousands of young men and women that are suffering because their education is not being recognised because of the isolation..Cry over buildings and forget our suffering.....I know Iknow...You have heard it all before.......

Why can't you for once comment on the subject?
Why all your comments have to be infected by propagandiasis?

You are making a mistake.
The education is not being recognised DUE to the fact that the diplomas come from an UNRECOGNISED "state" and not because of the isolation, the self imposed isolation actually. Therefore, my dear Zan, as long as illegalities are protected and supported this is what you will have.

But as I see you are capable of thinking those "suffering", imish, because of the UNRECOGNISED diplomas and you forget how hard it was for all those Famagustians who were forced to leave their belongings, homes and properties back and had to stay in tents and queue for a piece of bread. You fail to understand how hard it was for them to start their life from zero and stand on their feet again.
But you know what? I feel proud for me, for my family and for all those refugees and for Gcs in general who made their tiny country a progressive and respectful member of EU.

Whereas, you, you stand on your glass feet ranting and raving for your so called isolation while at the same time you fail to see the illegalities and violations of your beloved mighty Turkey.
You reap what you sow my friend.

"I think it was last last year, a TC court in Famagusta ruled that over 99% of the land of Maraş actualy belonged to a TC vakıf. Does anyone remember the details on that? As far as I remember they proved that the land had been unlawfully taken from them during the time the British had control of the Turkish Evkaf foundation."

To see the lie in this read Thomson's account of his visit to Famagusta in 1878. Varosi was then during Ottoman rule, a Greek Cypriot town, in other words GCs owned and occupied land there with no counterclaim by anyone. It is also intersting to read Thomson's descriptions of the people and culture of the times.

Bottom line is that the Ottomans left the GCs to live on what was then marginal land rife with fever. THe Ottomans preferred to take over the Venetian town within the walls of Famagusta. The GCs worked and turned it into a prosperous town. Tourism gave it added value. Now they invented the ploy of EVKAF to stick claims on the land. Typical robber mentality. Some day TC right wingers will realise that wealth is created not stolen.

Vakıf / Evkaf :

(religious or charitable) foundation (created by an endowed trust fund).

This is the best definition I could find for what an vakıf is ( I don't know if there is an exact english word to describe it.

Anyway. If I had to sum up the article it basically states that under ottoman rule there were many of these foundataions which had very large amounts of land all over Cyprus. After 1878 the British took control over the main addminstrative body of the vakıfs. By law "Vakıf/ Evkaf") property can never be sold or transfered to another owner. Until the year of 1907 there wasn't a proper land registry office in cyprus, the british set it up. But the british passed a law that gave people the right to take possesion certain types of vakıf land if they had been using it for 10 years or more. This was unlawful since legally "Ottoman Law" was in force on the island up to the date the british annexed it in 1914. I will try to translate important parts of the article and post them on the forum.

Tell us oh great Ottoman scholar,

How much of the land around Vienna is Evkaf land, and how much or Bulgaria and Romania?

Cheap tricks, one whole lifetime of cheap tricks. Some day there will be an imaginative and original trick and I will have a choking fit!
