Yes umit07, a bargaining chip is all varosha is, the tcs or turks refused to allow it to be run jointly insisting on a seperatist agenda.

Anyway: TCs refused, they want ercan not famagusta

Isn't that the essence of politics? Say OK to Ercan get Varosha back!
It was that simple!

That wasn't the essence of the post I replied to...

I know that Varosha has been behind barbed wire since 1974,but it is a real shame that that area of Cyprus has just been left to gather dust. You can still see 1974 models of cars still in the showroom window. It looks like there's nothing wrong with the buildings structurally, but it will take a huge effort to clean up & bring the buildings up to modern standards.

If the TC's had no intention of using it, it should have been handed back under negotiation. It is inexcusable that it now needs to be totally demolished and rebuilt from scratch again at huge cost.

Exactly what I'm saying. If I stole my neighbours lawn mower I would either keep it or give it back. Nothing to negotiate about.

And I meant that if you had a deficit of one lent item then would it not be right to keep the lawnmower anyway??

Kafenes, to put it bluntly, it was never going to be just 'given back' was it ?
Both sides sit down and talk, then they agree on how the city is handed back, or parts of the city, or where to 'draw the line' as far as the North and South are concerned. That to me is negotiating.

Instead, its been left to rot - no good to anyone now.

You can call it blackmail or you can call it negotiating, neither has worked or brought a solution. So the city remains empty, and just decays more and more. :(
