EU’s damning report on disabled

THE EUROPEAN Commission came up against a brick wall in Cyprus when it tried to gather information from the government for an EU-wide report on people with disabilities, it said.

“The collection of data about residential services for people with disabilities in Cyprus has proven a very difficult task. The establishment of key-contacts within the country has been impossible.

“We have tried to contact the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare several times but these tries were unfruitful,” said the damning report.

Even the information researchers did manage to obtain, after having to resort to the internet, lacked reliability and accuracy, the report said. Most of the data they found was six years old.

Mechanic faces law suit for stubbing out cigarettes outside plane

According to Phileleftheros sources, one of the two passengers was related to a former senior member of the police and the mechanic was told to “be careful” by other airport staff. The paper suggested this may explain why no further action was taken against the two men, who violated extremely serious airport safety rules.

I do not understand your gripe with France or me.

I did say I wasn't having a go at you and for that matter France although I don't personally care for the place as somewhere to live.

It often seems that some new EU countries are very selective which EU rules they keep to ~ those domestic rules which make money are kept and those new rules that will cost money are ignored even though huge fines have been paid since 2004.

To be honest I enjoy living in Cyprus but it's just so frustrating at times.

If you mean Medical Insurance, then we as retirees ( my husband is over 65) are covered up to 70% by the state, the remainder is paid by "Top Up" insurance which we pay to a private company, we pay nothing for treatment and nothing for medicines we present a card called ( Carte Vital) and a card which we are given by the insurance companies.
Should we need treatment by a specialist we pay by cheque and we are then refunded by the state and by the insurance company which goes directly into our bank account.
I hope that clears this up.
WE do not need Visa's we do not wait an age and ahalf for registration because it does not exist, we have a european passport just like you, the laws and rules and benefits here are for everyone with a European passport, everything is slick and efficient, as I said, it works here and everywhere else in Europe, Cyprus makes its own laws, please do not blame the rest of us if they are unfair.

If you or anyone else from European Union country wanted to settle in France there would be no barrier, you do not have to prove means and no-one pokes around in your bank account like in Cyprus.

Never bothered with it Purdey ~ I showed the guy my barclaycard multi trip insurance and he appeared satisfied with that ~ by the time the immigration in Nicosia pull my dusty file from the pile in filing cabinet number 9001 everything will ( I hope ) have changed.

Cyprus has always been like that, and there has always been 2 levels. The rules which apply to you may not apply to the man next to you.

I left Cyprus because it eventually wore me down, you do not care for France that is fine, that is one of the benefits of living a free life. You are not tied to anywhere. It is not the EU which is at fault it is the country you are in, you have the same choices as me, we are equal, the basic rules of the EU are for all the countries within the EU.

If you do not like what you see find another view.

I personally have always considered Cyprus to be in the Middle East due to it's geographical position, I have been pilloried for making such a claim before and will probably attract the same rebukes for my opinion now.

Quite apart from the geographical considerations (and I would like to meet the Cartographer that first drew the wiggly line around us !) I base my assertion on the 'Nature and Character' of the people who, as Cypriots, possessed a charm and sense of humanity which was totally at odds with our (now) Western counterparts.

The hospitality and generosity of the Cypriot people was a credit to humanity in days gone by, it is a sad indictment of those who have engineered our inclusion into the 'Club', that those qualities are disappearing at a rate of knots.

There are still areas in the Middle East where such genuine regard for the well-being of one's fellow man are apparent, I mourn the fact that Cyprus has taken (what I would consider to be) a downward spiral in it's finer cultural attributes.

In terms of 'Military and Political Might', I agree that Cyprus is now (due to it's allegiances with other 'Club Members') probably safer in a military sense, however, as the situation on the island clearly illustrates, politically it is still vulnerable to the chicanery of those who occupy the high ground in the said politics.

Therefore, we may be IN but you can count me OUT as far as feeling European is concerned.

In my rebellious opinion.

Eliko

You are right ... Cyprus is moving away from its peasant / pleasant roots.

The generosity I remember my mother dispelling to all and sundry that darkened our doorstep is but a mere distant shadowy memory ...

The welcoming open arms with freshly cooked offerings, at any hour, to anyone passing our veranda, have been replaced by myself to a sad, shy offer of a coke or biscuit ... :(
