8) anyway back to the thread.....i happen to like the hours that shops are open in cyprus, and the fact there is still a place for the small business and shop owner...for those not old enough this is how it used to be in the UK some years ago and had been for many years previously. but now everyone is allowed the "choice" to shop when they feel like it. (see commercial greed) which means more people working longer hours and weekends, more lorries on the roads at weekends supplying goods, more people working different shift patterns to each other in the family group and the erosion of the family group as a whole. And the big four supermarkets controlling the market place and prices (they are rising) thereby destroying the Choice everyone had been given!
No leave things in cyprus as they are for as long as is possible...and leave people a better quality of life and time together as a family.

So that's why I've had so many job offers since I've been here .

I must admit though one of the offers was working at my god daughters pig farm which didn't strike me as very appealing so I think I'll pass on that one.

Seriously though I was sorting out my money last year at my local bank which involved a few repeated visits ~ every time I went there was a guy sitting a couple of desks away who just sat there doing nothing day after day .

I asked the guy I was seeing what his colleague job was ~ the reply was " he's related to someone high in the bank and as he lives in Larnaca they have put him here" ~ I said " so what does he do then" reply " err actually nothing but he doesn't abuse it and he's always at his desk on time ~ is never late and has never had a day off sick" .

It's this kind of thinking that's preventing progress in Cyprus and other Med countries ~ Italy is particularly bad .

Bill ~~~ well connected in the pig industry

I don't think it will affect Cyprus like that. I might force working hours of the overall company to increase, but it will not affect the average person's working hour. Quality of life is likely to increase as many companies in the private sector will be forced to decrease their working hours as to comply with the European Union and wages are also likely to go up to as more unemployment benefits will be given out. Also as Europe is investing in new employment opportunities. Bringing in workforce from the non-EU country is likely to cease, there is little point in Europe investing in the it's job market if the average private employee is importing his/her workforce to save a quick buck.
