Thansk Sega I did realise that but what i dont understand is what hours do you really expect the shops will be open...they are human beings too and they want rest too...also they are open all the right times and shopping in Cyprus is so good...you are not stressed about parking....most of the places have parking areas or some small place at the frond (or might that will be the pavement) to park your car...so you do not need ages to park your car...you dont worry about how long will take you to go for shopping because Cyprus is so small anyway...and after all why they should be open 24 hours? I find shopping worst in UK than it is in Cyprus. If I need bread and milk or something to eat or drink at 12:30 am, 3 am or any other time i can find bakeries like Zorbas which is open 24/7, kiosk that are open 24/7 (where I can find more things that I might need). All the gas stations have pubs that work with cash or credit cards, all the restaurants do not stop serving from 9:30, most of the delivery places for food do deliveries until 11:30, all the coffee shops are open at least until midnight, all the bars are open at 3 or 4 (or even later) etc etc

While in UK (or to be fair where I live) I can get food after 11 only from some crapy kebabs that I will have to go and pick it up, no kiosk, small shops, big shops or anything else for bread, milk or anything else....pubs start serving food at 9:00 in the best occasion, and restaurants 9:30 the best occasion, only few pubs work with cash and credit cards, no coffee shops will be open in the evening everything close by midnight, and clubs and bars close by 2 or 3 am etc

But if you ignore all that the main problem with Cyprus is that we have breaks for lunch...if you worked in Cyprus that the sun is always up there especially during the summer you will demand break during lunch time and day off...but even that the last years i noticed more shops staying open during lunch, stay open until 7pm and lots of times Sundays especially if its during holidays season.

So I will ask again...what this thread is all about???

you are not stressed about parking
Really? I find a lot of busy places here much more stressful for parking when you have to negotiate a million cars strewn all over the streets/pavements. Fun when a car *has* to park right outside a shop (even though could be loads of spaces on road) to the point where their mirrors are almost touching the door.

the sun is always up there especially during the summer you will demand break during lunch time and day off
I get that its hot, and outside jobs fair enough, but can't understand AC office jobs. Why do the banks close in the afternoons? Because of the heat? With the AC it is like winter in there. When I was in Dubai we used to huddle next to the windows (50c heat outside) for warmth or wear jumpers. They all loved it with the AC set to like 16c. Note that Cyprus is like the UK compared to Dubai, and they worked all hours. We were pulling 15-20 hour days for a high priority project but the normal workers easily did 12 hours a day 6 days a week without a sweat. We were told is very common there. Ah, paid for my first car outright with all that overtime :)

Cheers

Some time ago there was a political debate on changing the working hours of the people in Cyprus, to match with that of Europe. We'll be working the same hours as other European countries. This would assist the development of Europe and European-based companies. They will be able to easily call and contact people during Cypriot working hours. It is not always easy to match working hours, particularly as meetings and lunch breaks are likely to be in the middle.

I think other European Countries, especially in the private sector work less hours. So far a I have heard of private company in Cyprus expecting their employees to work from 08:00 - 02:00, then from 03:00 - 06:00, which is 9 hours in total, and this is with no overtime.

I am not sure why you are stressed about Parking....never had a problem where to park my car....big shops by law have to own parking place, small shops either own a small parking place or have place at the frond of the shop enough place for parking. Thats why many people park in frond of the shops. If I want to go to the center for shopping or my job is there ... we have lots of parking places all over and you park where it suits you. Also in Cyprus doesnt cost 25 pounds per day. Where I live down in the center there is a huge place for parking with 5 or 6 floors but is the only one i found for a big area...ok thats a lie one that has 10-15 places and another one that you need to is always full during the day and you are nit allowed to park during the night. Love Cyprus and parking on the pavement. I know its not fair and legal but its one of the small bits that I enjoy so much in Cyprus.

As the AC you are right all shops these days has AC but why it should be a law for half of them and not all of them. Anyway, according to what I heard they will change it soon and make you all happy. Now we have breaks you complained when they change it you will complain because you work more. I personally like the working time table in Cyprus and i dont really care what time they will close.

Sega you said that people in Cyprus work more hours than others in European countries...someone else mention that Cypriot do not work that much and they just mess around in offices...I am really wondering how those two ideas come from people who live in Cyprus.

I personally believe that Cypriots are hard working people and when they have to work they work...many of them do 2 or 3 jobs to survive. but when they have days off or when their work finish they want to enjoy it and they demand a day off or demand to have dinner with their families and not working 24 hours. Why is so wrong that?

It depends, employment in the private and public sector are two completely different things.

A typical wage in the public sector is much higher than that of the private sector. Normally people in the public sector work less hours for more money.

Now if somebody is hired by the government (public sector) and he/she has a second or third job he not doing what is permitted. The government does not allow their employees to have more than one job, and this is why they pay them well.

They feel if they employees are being overworked it would bring overall productivity down, their right. If your overworked your energy levels are likely to go down and therefore more mistakes will be made, which means more time will be spend fixing the mistakes, your better off working at 80% to guarantee 80%. By doing this you keep your workers happy, your customers happy and the overall company working smoothly. Unfortunately greedy bosses in the private sector don't care. They are think backwards and believe more employees working long hours for next to nothing equals more money, this is obviously false.

More employees working long hours for next to nothing equals low energy, low moral, low productivity, more mistakes, more unhappy customers, unhappy workers, which makes your workers less loyal to the company. The government understand this.

However, many greedy government employees are playing the system. They have their normal government job and they also have a side job, normally registered on a spouses name, so they can be avoided. As you can guess having more than one job causes tiredness, productivity to fall and equals more mistakes, not really what the government is paying for. People working in the government don't need more than their initial job to survive.

Spot on Sega, you are right about Government employees with more than one job.Maybe if they worked longer hours and worked on productivity output, there salaries and pensions would be justified.
