FORMER GERMAN CHANCELLOR SHROEDER ARRIVES IN TRNC ON FRIDAY

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

German ex-Chancellor to meet KKTC officials

Germany's former chancellor, Gerhard Schroeder, will arrive in northern Cyprus on Friday for a two-day visit upon the invitation of Turkish Cypriot Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus' (KKTC) Prime Ministry announced yesterday.

Schroeder will be accompanied by Cüneyd Zapsu, a close aid to Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, during his visit, during which he will have talks with KKTC President Mehmet Ali Talat and representatives from the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce (KKTO). Ahead of his departure from the island on Saturday, Schroeder will hold a press conference at a hotel in Girne.
Unlike his conservative successor, Germany's current Chancellor Angela Merkel, Social Democrat Schroeder has been a firm supporter of Turkey's bid to become a full member of the EU.

Over the weekend Schroeder paid a brief visit to İstanbul, where he met with Erdoğan, again accompanied by Zapsu. There was no official statement about the content of the private meeting between Schroeder and Erdoğan.

Zapsu, who studied management and economics in Germany after graduating from a German high school, was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany by the German Embassy in Turkey last year for his "excellent efforts" in improving bilateral relations between Germany and Turkey.

I will not be surprised if he is invited, probably, to receive the gift he was promised.

As Kikapu said G.Sh. is not a politician anymore and I do not see why many of you wetted your pants from joy for his visit.

He is a "private citizen" and a business man in Russia last time I looked and not a political figure anymore, therefore he can go any place he wishes. I'm sure special permit was sought from the RoC to land his private plane in Ercan so to keeps things on the up and up.!

Too many people are reading too many things into everything these days, because the year is 2008.!!!

Same was also said about Y2K.!!

What a "fizzle" that one turned out to be.

I think you will find that the mass hysteria of the Y2K incident was one thing but all the work that went on to avoid a total collapse of the system was another...Millions were spent on stopping that and it was successful or you wouldn't be so flippant about it now....We were warned and we took precautions and avoided a catastrophe.....Take head now and do the same this time around.....MR. Shroeder still punches pretty hard in Germany ...Make no mistake about that either.....

Zan,

The Y2K was the biggest scam that was created to end off with the last century, before we had the next biggest scam, which was the stock market bubble, which burst, and now the housing bubble is now ripe for another bust.

We were told that planes would fall out of the skies. The only airline that did not fly any planes as I remember, was Qantas from Australia. They were concerned perhaps, that their Boeing 747's would turn into "Boeing Pumpkins" at the stroke of year 2000 over the Pacific Ocean.

So much has been written about 2008. We are told "Wait and see for all the changes that will take place regarding the TRNC". If this keeps up, we may have to call all these hoopla the "TRNC Bubble" down the road.
The question will then be asked, "did it make any sound as it burst".??

(The last comment was for our friend Zan..he likes things that makes sound...like falling trees in forests !!)

Former German Chancellor in bid to boost business to the north
By Simon Bahceli

FORMER German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder will fly into the north on Friday in an apparent effort to boost business in the breakaway Turkish Cypriot state, the German Embassy confirmed yesterday.

Speaking to the Cyprus Mail, Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy Joachim Heidorn said, “I can confirm that he is coming to the island on Friday and that he will be accompanied by a group of businessmen.” Heidorn stressed however that Schroder was visiting the island as a “private citizen” and not as a representative of the German government.

“He is no longer an MP; he is an employee of Gazprom,” Heidorn said.

However, links between the Schroder visit and Gazprom were played down yesterday by head of the north’s Chamber of Commerce Hasan Ince, who said that the planned meetings had more to do with efforts to generate business links between the north and Germany.

“We’ll be holding talks with businessmen involved primarily in tourism, but also some other fields,” Ince told the Mail.

While Ince refused to be drawn on what the “other fields” might be under discussion, attention has focused on wealthy Turkish Cypriot businessman Ali Ozmen Safa, who recently unveiled ambitious plans to bring electricity to the north of the island via underground cables from Turkey. Thoughts of a link between the energy giant and power projects involving the north were further boosted by the fact that Safa’s Star Kibris was first to break the news of Schroeder’s visit yesterday morning.

Spokesman for the Turkish Cypriot leadership Hasan Ercakica yesterday, for his part, focused on the political significance of the visit, saying it would be “positive” as it would attract German media to the north. He added that Schroder’s visit had received the backing of Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat.
