Aidan.
Aidan,
Sorry to have to disagree with you, but the red saltire cross was that of a powerful Irish family (can't remember the name). It is said to be the cross of St. Patrick, but since St. Patrick was not a martyr, he is not - strictly speaking - entitled to have a cross as an emblem. As a vexillologist, I read up quite heavilly on flag matters. The Irish tricolor is supposed to be a flag representing peace between the Catholic and Protestent Irish, hence the green and orange.
Northern Island still uses (unofficially) a variant of the Ulster Province flag (St. Georges Cross on white with a six pointed star in the center. The star has a red hand in the center and the star is surmounted by a crown).
