Head of Greek Orthodox Church dies, schools closing?

Postby 123456 » Mon Jan 28, 2008 9:56 am

I've just read on the BBC News http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7212502.stm that the head of the Greek Orthodox chuch is brown bread.

Can anyone tell me if that means the schools are going to be closing in relation to it?

I don't want to get caught out like last time.

You could show some respect, the man has just died!!
The schools will probably have a day of mourning. Phone your child's school - sure they will tell you, once the Education department decide that is!

I think you'll find I have shown neither respect nor disrespect.

As an Atheist it would be disingenuous of me to convey any sort of respect, dis or otherwise. I have merely acknowledged that I am aware that the schools may close and have asked a pertinent question in order to, hopefully, receive an informative answer.

The term "brown bread" is rhyming slang for "dead".

How many in Cyprus live in East London or are cockneys? What tree does your kind grow on?

How many in Cyprus live in East London or are cockneys

I find that rather humorous considering that the majority of Cypriots appear to be more than well acquainted with London.

The acceptance of slang, ryhming or otherwise is widespread throughout modern media and can often be deployed as a disarming tool linguistically in order to soften the impact of an otherwise cold or abrupt statement.

Only those who have spent their lives living under (or on) a rock would not have been able to instantly recognise the meaning of "brown bread" when used at the end of my original sentence. Especially considering the title of the thread.

Phoenix, thank you for the notification but we were informed today about wednesday's closure which, I think, is to do with some other religious dogma.

As a Moslem I find it distasteful or disrespectful. You have your opinion I have mine of you.
