I enquired about a second-hand car that happened to be getting sold by a Sovereign Base chap (he was really nice and helpful about all sorts of Cyprus issues) but he said the car was "duty free" only for people attached to the Base :? He then suggested that there was a duty to be paid on every vehicle, with exemptions applying only to SBA people.

Regarding residency:
Well I was born in Cyprus, but all my working life I have been an official UK resident .... British (now EU) passport holder, Tax paid to Her Majesty (now Revenue and Customs) etc.

I assumed I would have to live in Cyprus for 3 years and then apply for residency like any other foreigner? :?

If you were born in Cyprus and have Cypriot parents then you are Cypriot.

I'm not Cypriot so had to go to the immigration within the first 90 days of arriving here and register for my aliens card and eventually residency so I'm here legally ~ I believe this may change soon .

I don't know where you get the three years bit from :?

As for your car ~ duty free on the bases is a little different from the duty free say that a retired person coming to Cyprus would enjoy .

There are some cars advertised by sellers that were bought here or brought here and no duty was paid~ the duty has to be paid to the C & E by the seller before they can sell it to you ~ it's the sellers problem not yours to pay any duty owed.

OK thanks Bill, it makes some sense now.

Since you know so much ..... :D ... May I just ask one more question ?
(Please don't think me too stupid, and don't tell anyone else  )

The road speed signs such as 50 or 65 dotted around the place ..... are they Km.p.h or m.p.h? :?

I assumed they were Km.p.h. (naturally cautious) but everyone keeps overtaking me

Also, I got doubly confused on the motorway to Nicosia where they gave two speeds 100 and 65 which I took to be 100Km.p.h. or 65m.p.h

So I don't know what the lone 65 speed sign really signifies now at all !

Morning Phoenix mou. The road signs are indeed in Km. p.h. Try not to speed, ha ha!!
Someone once told me that the two conflicting signs along the motorways - 100 and 65 - should be taken as the 100 being the top speed and the 65 being the minimum. :? Not sure if she was pulling my leg or not......................................................... :?

It will say so on the registration document and hopefully the seller will be honest about it in the first place ~~ also the transport dept will not let the seller transfer the ownership to you until the duty has been paid.

As I said it's the sellers responsibility to pay .

I have a not very bright friend of a friend ( met him at a BBQ last summer) who bought a car off a very nice  English guy ~ the seller omitted to tell him the car was duty free and the tax hadn't been paid ~ my friend thinking he was still in the UK bought the car and drove off ~ and a couple of weeks later when he figured out what to do went to the transport dept to change over the documents to his name .

They wouldn't let him transfer the car to his name until the duty was paid by the seller also there was 18 months road tax to pay as the seller hadn't even paid for that ~ as I said the guy wasn't very bright as he didn't check that the car was taxed and thought the mot sticker on the windscreen was the tax disc.

The seller had done a runner back to the UK by the time he tried to find him

But when buying from a dealer there will be no problems except the usual when buying any second hand car ~ that's it's mechanically sound.

As for the guy from the base ~ I would say don't touch it ~ you may regret it.

Hello Kaycee,

to answer your original question, Your personal possessions, ie household items and so on are duty free.

The car, sadly you have to pay a duty on it, registration fees and number plates.

The cost depends on the engines size, age and type of vehicle.

It is calculated on the CC of the engine essentially.

Upto 1650cc you pay cy£1/cc, from 1650 - 2050cc its cy£2/cc.

The total cost is derated over 10 years so if (as in my case my care was 7 years old) was say 7 years then you will also get a 75% reduction.

Then there are some small emissions fee. If your car is 1998 or later these figures should be on your log book, if not then they get calculated here for you.

Registration and plates is a 200-400 pounds.

As an eg (from what can recall) my car was a 2000cc, 7 years old diesal hatchback. I paid around the cy£1400 mark.

hope that helps.

That's correct Bubbles ~ although I thought it was the maximum speeds for different classes of vehicles when I first came here.

But a very nice police woman friend of mine tells me it's the maximum and minimum speeds on the highway

Contrary to popular belief I do have friends in Cyprus

No it's not Mrs Bill although the thought of her in a police woman's costume , basque and black stockings is appealing but I doubt they would go with her granny style knickers :(

From where you all came to Cyprus, if you say you are not Cypriots, you don't have signs on the road? You get a driving license for good luck or what?

That's why here are so many accidents, nobody knows the rules but they have a valid driving license.

Very nice. It should also give you the right to beat the one that hits you on the road, just because this is the only way to calm stupid drivers down.

Just my f@cking 2 cents.

L.E. and yes I am mad 'cause a retard in a mercedes just didn't looked before getting out of the parking, and after I've passed him he was the one annoyed. How is that???

If the signs are highlighted in blue it is for MPH, for in red there are for KPH. However, people naturally speed so the overtaking bit would happen in either case.

Get a beer and stop driving.
The one in blue say the minimum allowed, the one in red reflect an interdiction. Get a book first and then speak.
