Churchill's response

Let me give you a historic example on the issue. In 1907, Sir Winston S. Churchill of Britain plans to pay a visit to the island. Cypriot Greek member of the Kavanin Assembly, Bishop Kyrillos, reminds Churchill that Greek Cypriots expect a British surprise and permission to the annexation of the island as Britain entertained them with the annexation of seven Aegean islands in the past. Churchill in short responds to Kyrillos that the ruling of the island rests with the Ottoman and Turks may want the same thing as the Greek Cypriots do. Isn't this a marvelous answer?

I bet Churchill did not say those words out of love for the Turks or Ottomans. Mind you it was well before his defeat at Chanakkale. It just did not suit the interests of GB.

It turns out that ENOSIS did not suit anyone Deniz.......Then, now or ever...

Ofcourse not. Even the more intelligent GCs know that now - I think.

What you mean Bananiot and Miltiades...Can't think of any more just now but Kikapu is not one of them....

Kikapu one of them? I had no idea.

Do you mean he has been fooling us all this time?

Well he never answered my question about him discovering that his family were actually Greek converts and that is why he is the way he is and that he has converted back so ................

I had no idea. But why doesnt he come clean about it. Everything he says makes more sense now. Can you get 'double-Lino-Bambakoi'?

Told you........Three times I have asked now and still no reply...

Zan , stop acting like an imbecile mate , Kikapu , a Turkish Cypriot and a realist sees that the creation of the "TRNC" is considered illegal by the ENTIRE world and that the persistence of some in promoting this foreign army manufactured "republic" as a legal entity is utterly futile. It is the partitionists such as you , VP and others that are being utterly ridiculous especially every time you use inverted commas in mentioning the ROC , like or not the ONLY Cyprus government recognised INTERNATIONALY.What the occupying army supports is ILLEGAL as far as Europe and the rest of the world is concerned.Every time there is a European directive concerning the T/Cs your up in arms that recognition is round he corner , well there is as much chance for that as there is for ENOSIS. !!
Kikapu along with many true Cypriots see Cyprus as one and not as two separate states like you and VP see.
The Republic of Cyprus is one whole entity with part of under the occupation of Turkey .The T/Cs are now a minority in the region of Cyprus where they once thought they would be the majority , alas not so .

What are you ranting about now ?... :?

Out of the frying pan into the fire

You really should just shut up and give us all a rest from witnessing the creaking of your rusty cogs ....

Phoenix sometimes it is better to admit you've gone too far and step back. Don't dig that hole any deeper!

Niki what are you on about? .... if you have not followed the posts with a fine-tooth comb now is not a good time to get your oar in, dear. :D

Where have I gone too far precisely?

Do you have a point?

Or have you just had a bad day and are generally miffed ...in which case fire away! :D I have broad shoulders ( and that is not a reference to my size ... more metaphorical  )

I have followed this very closely. You've gone too far.

You (as I said) made outrageous generalising statements about British people managing to be personally insulting to people on the way and then tried to bulldoze over people who were upset with your comments with a strident attitude.

This has nothing to do with 'broad shoulders' and as you know I haven't retaliated recently but in this you have gone too far!!

Unless you can point me in the direction of the comments that you think are "too far" I cannot help you. You appear flummoxed.

I think you are under the misguided confusion that abounds the forum where the English and the British are viewed as synonymous.

Not all British people are English. You might be English ... I am not! But I am British. So any criticism of the British is also of myself, and I am as entitled as any other British person to comment ... unless you think otherwise, in which case explain why.

My complaints have been with the British ... I have not mentioned English except to also correct Zan.

Do you understand the difference?

BTW .... you do not seem to have a problem with the title of the thread nor the accusations against the British that the author has made .... why are those comments correct and only my statements "too far"?....

Are you afraid of him because he is Turkish :?

English... British???? What are you going on about? You are confused!

Where on earth does that come into anything? It's the same thing isn't it? Oh but hang on... you're from Scotland!!

So if you are criticising yourself (as a Brit) you are admitting to being uneducated, hating the French and anybody foreign and love to seek fish and chip shops when abroad?

You said it, not me!!

Aaaahhh that British sense of humour .... I so miss it!

Niki, English - British was under discussion when you butted in ...... and is reflected in the title of the thread

Keep up!

I see you really do not know the difference between defining the English and describing the British ...

May I recommend Jeremy Paxman's critical tome on The English ? That might help you where I have failed.

But I will once again ask you, since you are more concerned with silencing me than discussing the thread:

What do you make of the title and the author's assumptions?

Do you have an opinion?

.... or are you just going to hound me to play silly buggers?

Then you too support the illegal Akritas Pan and its use for getting us out of government and then tricking the UN to recognise the "RoC".....You seem to accept anyone as long as they subscribe to this deception as long as it is for the "RoC"....

The question I asked Kikapu is still valid...Has he converted to being Greek....

A simple yes or no from either of you will do....Your sense of justice seems to have its limits.......

Please tell me where Iraq comes into the thread.I don't wish to remind you but the Iraqi people wanted change, they asked for help from the coalition.Yes it has gone on and on but ? There are still troops in Iraq, from what I gather the British are there now only as back up and spend 99.9% of their time confined to base.
Phoenix please tell us what problem you have with your countrymen and women (the British).

Racism comes in all shapes and forms, skin colour is not the only trigger to such backword views.Maybe have a look at some of the Jewish schools in London, why do they feel the need to have 50ft fences and security 24 7.

What makes you think I have a problem with the British? Seeing things for what they are, does not cause me any problems.

BTW Countrymen and British needs a whole new thread.

I was born British, because I was born in Cyprus, whilst it was under colonial rule.

....... As were millions of Indians, Sri Lankans, Jamaicans, Kenyans, Malaysians etc etc etc in their respective homelands.

Someone early on in the thread implied Cypriots were xenophobic ... the discussion moved onto the British (the core of this thread) and then Zan moved it onto the English.

Niki showed us she understands "Scottish" is different (yet where she gets the idea I am Scottish, is perplexing ... maybe she thinks marriage causes a quick conversion  )

It seems to me there are a lot of people here not discussing from an equal level of comprehension.

Futility springs to mind upon the realisation that one has made assumptions as to people's level of understanding ..... then it surmises they haven't a clue what is really under discussion.

Purdey, why don't you start a thread so that we can break down terminology (British, English, Scottish, Welsh, Irish, Greek, Turkish, Cypriot plus more?) so that we have a yardstick

I can't do that as I am in and out all day and can't commit too much time ...
