Youtube video from 1973

Postby bill cobbett » Sun Jan 27, 2008 1:39 pm

Came across a video of an Easter celebration from the occupied village of Agios Amvrosios (aka Esentepe), Kyrenia District shot in 1973.

It can be found at http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ylipF2BRG ... re=related

Or put in " Agios Amvrosios Kyrenia Cyprus ( Trizoira ) " in the youtube search field.

Wow, that gave me Goosebumps...especially after seeing the video taken of how Agios Amvrosios is today...Thank you for uploading this Bill, it's when you watch videos like this that it hits you just how tragic the whole situation is. One can only hope that all Cypriots being kept away from the villages and towns that they grew up in can one day return... :(

On a slightly happier note, that game sure does look like a lot of fun, although I probably would have been sick after a few swings, I can't even handle the teacups for goodness sake!

I just love the old man sitting at the front in his traditional Vraka, age sure didn't stop him from having fun! :D

Yes, the music is brilliant as well.

To be fair I only uploaded one of the videos, the badly shot one of the village. The other was put up by a chap/chapess with the nom de plume "assos video".

The music is really beautiful, it fits perfectly…

Oh yes of course, I just realised. Well thank you for uploading the link, I keep watching it, it has a haunting quality to it, especially when you watch it after watching the video you uploaded. Do you have a connection with the village bill? It really is a very beautiful village...:)

Mine's the all too common story - my father, late grandparents, aunt, uncle, several great uncles and great aunts, great-grandparents etc etc are from there. Sometimes I feel a bit of me is there as well.

Sure many forum members with roots in the occupied villages and towns will have similar feelings.

It's all very sad Paaul. That's the Cyprus Tragedy.

I still maintain that we should move on in a reconciliation that would be helped if those of both communities (and the third parties) who committed crimes like these were brought before the Courts to account for their actions.

Definitely, my Grandmothers family on my father’s side originate from the North, from a village called Limnia which is near Varosi, and my father, although he was actually born in England, spent most of his childhood growing up there. Although I was born after the invasion, just by hearing stories from my family of village life, I do feel like part of me is there…

nostalgia is a good thing but after 35 years it is just a nostalgia we have to think to make a peaceful Cyprus for our children and never and ever to force them to go
