Dear friends Some parts from Mr Christofis Economides book Called DEMYTHOLODİZED HİSTORY OF CYPRUS.
How the British Took Over Cyprus. The Fall of the OTTOMAN EMPİRE and the ''EASTERN PROBLEM''
In 1571-Cyprus was conquered by the Turks.During that time the Ottoman Empire was at its most glories perid and empire streched from Hungary to Create, from Algeria to Mecca, and from Crimea to Iranian Gulf.
How ever from 18th Century onwards, the empire started to weaken and the major powers at the time (Russia,UK,France and Austria) were competing with eacother to share the Sultan's landTo make matters worse , the people of Balkans particularly the Serbians and Greeks, started to revolt in the 19th Century. This problem regarding the fate of the Ottoman territory of SE Europe was referred to as the 'Eastern Problem' Since Cyprus was attached to Ottoman Empire, the ''Cyprus Problem'' also constituted part of eastern problem.
In the 19th century, although the UK wanted to take over a sizeable part of the Ottaman Empire territory, it refrained from doing so , because it was being watched by the other powers, and was consequently apprehensive that Russia, who considered itself to be ''The Chief Inheritor''(of Ottaman Empires territory) would achive its dream of expanding to mediterranean by taking over Istanbul and Canakkale.
England was traying to prevent this from happening. Moreover,England was most probably deterred from fighting with France over Ottaman Empire territory ,sinc France constituted a treat not only for England but also for the Sultan, having entered into an alliance with Russia. Thus England preferred to find peaceful ways of taking over the Ottoman Empire's territory.
After1875 ,the Sultan declared himself bankrupt, because he was unable to meet the demand for taxes and particular the paymants for the huge depts he had borrowed from British bankers. The British Government seised their opportunity and tried to sound out whether or Sultan would yield some of his territory (thinking of Cyprus in particular) in exchange for this economic dept. However, the Sultan's reply was negative, allegedly because he was afraid this would lead to other countries following suit and seeking similar concessions.
NEXT İSSUE will be NEXT Weekend.
