The Presidential Spokesman Hasan Ercakica has said that the Greek Cypriot Side is doing all it can to prevent the launching of a new initiative on the Cyprus Problem.
Talking to reporters during his weekly press briefing, the Presidential spokesman drew attention to Greek Cypriot Side’s efforts within the EU and the UN to prevent a solution to the Cyprus Problem.
the Greek Cypriot Administration has launched an initiative within the EU to amend the wording of a draft report prepared by the European Parliament’s committee of petitions on the issue of Maras, which was already against the interest of the Turkish Cypriot Side.
Ercakica also pointed out that the leader of the Greek Cypriot Administration Tassos Papaodpoulos had sent a letter to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon in an attempt to render ineffective the UN Chief’s latest meeting with the Turkish President Abdullah Gul.
Reminding that the Turkish President had conveyed during his meeting with Mr. Ban, the Turkish Sides’ readiness and desire for a new initiative on the Cyprus Problem, the Presidential spokesman said that it was clear to say that the Greek Cypriot Side was doing all it can to prevent the international community from launching a new initiative.
“Despite numerous statements regarding the willingness of the Turkish side for the new initiative and the fact that this willingness has personally been conveyed to the UNSG, first by President Mr. Talat himself and then by the President of Turkey, we would like to point out that the Greek Cypriot side refrains from displaying a clear stance regarding the issue” he added.
Touching upon statements made by the leader of the Peoples’ Party Rasit Perter and the main opposition National Unity Party Tahsin Ertugruloglu linking the issue of Kosovo’s independence with the Cyprus Issue, the Presidential spokesman said that there major were differences between the two issues, He said that the Turkish Cypriot Side has convinced the international community that it desires a mutually acceptable solution to the Cyprus Problem, based on two founding states and the political equality of the two sides.
Pointing out that Kosovo’s efforts to gain independence was carried out in harmony with the international community’s outlook, the Presidential Spokesman said that it would not be correct to switch to a secessionist policy.
He said that such a policy would not be welcomed by the international community.
