Two English girls looking for work!!

Postby QueenBee » Tue Jan 22, 2008 7:57 pm

WORK WANTED.

I wondered whether anyone could give me any advice on finding a job in Cyprus?

Me and my friend are looking to move to Cyprus in march this year. We are both 22 English females.

Ideally we wanted to have a job before we came out there, if possible with accommodation as we don't want to be stuck as soon as we arrive.

Does anyone know of any jobs of this kind/ have any advice for us?

Of advice?
where's the best place to look for work?
we were thinking paphos as we have both been there several times. Also, in reality are we going to be able to get jobs and afford an apartment/ bills between us?

well, we both have customer service experience...... but unfortunately do not speak Greek. We have a basic knowledge of bar work and also admin/ office work.

We don't mind working hard for a living, but we dont want to do the whole PR job in Ayia Napa, so please don't suggest it!!!!

To be honest I think you will find it to be really tough…

Your best bet would be to find a cheap package holiday and then see if you could fix up something while you are here.

I’ve met women in my village (Pissouri) that have come over on the promise of a job with accommodation to find extremely long hours, seven days a week and a salary that simply isn’t paid – once here and relying on your ‘employer’, what can you do?

Grump is right, it's fucking hard, but....being female helps, and being a savvy female helps and provides you with valuable knowledge and waryness of sleazy exploitative bubbles (men).

I think your best bet is to forget about office based work / customer services. Even with greek, it aint gonna happen. There isn't just a lack of jobs for the open competitive market - there are NO jobs. Because it's a corrupt system based on nepotism. Forget the EU, it's WHO you know not what you know.

This leaves you with bar work, which is hard as Greek male businessmen are wankers and prefer cheap, open-to-suggestion Poles and Romanians, as they are cheap and pliant. They are also anti-English.

Sorry to put you off! But I have much experience of living in Cyprus, working in Cyprus, having a wanky Greek Cypriot family and putting up with the bullshit.

I wish you well - if you are hard, gritty, no nonsense, but can cover it witha veil of fluffiness, you'll do well. In a bar job.

So ask yourself. Is it worth it? You may be better off in a more progressive, civilised and less corrupt island to work in, like a Spanish island, or a mainland Greek island.

Good luck
