The ignition device lights a pilot light which then heats a safety device which only allows main gas through if it is satisfied that the pilot light is alight.

The fault may be no spark, pilot blocked or partially blocked. the only way to determine this is to light the pilot with a match.

You won't blow your face off as the only gas that will escape is the pilot supply.
