Average Salary for a Graphic Designer

Postby lucy_mcmurray » Tue Jan 22, 2008 3:31 pm

Hi everyone

I've got a question, I hope that you can help me

I'm an English-Cypriot and I grew up in Cyprus. Right now I am overseas but I am thinking of coming back to be with my family. I am wondering if anyone knows what the average salary would be for a graphic designer. I have two BAs, about 3 years of experience and I speak fluent English and Greek. If anyone could give me an idea I would really appreciate it. Thanks a lot!

I think it depends on the company. I think the salaries start at around 700-800 cyprus pounds per month.
For your experience you might get 1000, if you're lucky. :D

I can tell you one thing.
Cyprus has too many designers for its size!!!!!
From my 8 closest friends, 5 of them are designers.
They are everywhere.

For sure they don't START with 700-800!! They start with around 500 or even less! With 3 years of experience and if you are good at what you do then 700 is what you should hope for. You can get up to 1000 or above, but not much above, if you have a top portfolio and you are very good and very creative and you manage to find a good company. But don't come in Cyprus asking for salaries over 800 as almost no company will give that money without trying you first.

The issue is that Cyprus doesn't value design and marketing. There is very little strategy and the marketing budgets are ridiculously small so the designers don't get paid much. The same level of experience in the UK would give a salary of around £20k - £25K per year.

When I began to explore new business here I was asked to look at a project where the budget was £4K, the same project in the UK would have been at least £30K (I said no thanks). To be fair the customer base in Cyprus is much smaller so less money is made to give to marketing.

Cyprus will need to change however if they want to compete with European and international markets.

We decided to work with UK and other countries, Cypriot companies just don't have the budgets. I think the design companies here do a fantastic job considering what they have to work with.

Dan, are you being deliberately obtuse or are you in reality just quite dim? :?
