Internet connections

Postby Selena79 » Tue Jan 22, 2008 2:43 pm

Hi everyone,

read the last posts about internet, but i would need some help.
I just moved to Cyprus and need internet as soon as possible. Could you tell me what possibilities i have?

Everything i need is a speed enough for skype and some other voip calls. What speed do i need for the fine quality?

What providers are there? Actually i do not need a telephoneline, can i have cablenet? I live in the Center of Limassol. Any deposit needed? How long does it take till it actually works?

thanks!

Hi Selena,

As your in Limassol Town you should be able to get broadband easily enough; ask in a CYTA shop.

If your outside of town you may need a dish, if so have a word with cyprusgrump.

I would advise you to go to PrimeTel, not Cyta.
It takes around 15 working days until they enable your line.

Hello, welcome.

In terms of internet connections Cyprus is not exactly in the European league table. We have one of the slowest internet connections in Europe. However there is still much flexibility from ISP to ISP.

The main provider is CYTA, which is the telecommunications company of Cyprus. They provide many offers, most of which are overpriced. However the one that is noticably good is the satellite internet. As you probably, know people have the great benefit of building their homes in rural areas. This of course means that in order for you to access high-speed internet your home needs to be close to an exchange point. If you are in a rural area the chances of having this benefit are slim. CYTA realised this and decided to offer Satellite Internet, which offers a 1Mb/s connection.

CYTA's ADSL prices seem to be expensive in comparisson to others. There are many other ISP's including, PrimeTel, OteNet. CableNet, Spidernet etc. But as I said before, Cyprus is relatively expensive when it comes to broadband prices.

In my choice the best ISP's are OteNet and CableNet, but you need to be in the correct area in order to get these packages. I am currently using OteNet, I recieve a 1.5 mb/s connection for 23 pounds/month which includes connection fee, a start-up cost of 25 pounds was required for the modem. The service is not capped and therefore you can have unlimitted downloads and uploads. I am very happy with them, I've never had a problem, all my friends who have CYTA keep complaining about the disconnections. CYTA's equivalent package is around 40+ pounds/month.

If anybody believes another ISP offers better deals in terms of connection speed and price please do say, I would be interested in know.

If you are coming here for a short while, not a heavy web user and need Internet quick the best option for you is CYTAFORALL, which you can get for no setup free and subscription, you get charged 0.03 cent a minute, however this is a dial up service so speeds are restricted to the speed of your dial up modem (normally 56kb/s = 4/6 kb/s true download).

I also did my research prior to installing my Internet, PrimeTel is a good service, however it is linked to your television, similar to NTL/Cable&Wireless. Which means if somebody is watching TV or/and using the telephone the Internet connection suffers. Since I am a high Internet user and have my own local network all of which are on the Internet simultaneously.

The options available to you depend on where you live.

It's also worth remembering that if you use a satellite connection it is useless for online gaming and will introduce a delay ~2sec when chatting on Skype.

But Cyta’s satellite connection is only one way (i.e. for downloading) – you still need a telephone line to connect to the Internet. This means you are severely limited on the upload speed and the system can’t offer an ‘always on’ link.

We on the other hand offer a true two-way system which both sends and receives data from the satellite and is connected 24/7.

Oh and the latency on the satellite is about a second, not two seconds.

How much can you provide the service and what is your connection speed?

CableNet is not available in the center of Limassol. Your options are I-choice, Primetel and maybe Otenet. With all 3 you will need a telephone line though.
