Barroso called division of Nicosia an absurd situation

Postby joe » Sun Jan 20, 2008 4:12 pm

Joint statements by the President of the Republic and the President of the European Commission
18/01/2008

The President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso expressed today the belief that in 2008 there can be an opportunity to address the Cyprus issue in a real spirit of compromise and to find a solution to this long-lasting problem. He also called the existence of the green line and the division of Nicosia an absurd situation.

Speaking to the Press after a meeting with the President of the Republic Mr Tassos Papadopoulos, in Nicosia Mr Barroso congratulated Cyprus for adopting the euro in such a short time following its accession to the EU.

On his part, welcoming Mr Barroso, the President of the Republic said that the President of the European Commission “has been guiding the EU to new avenues of progress and growth with great success. We have been working on various Councils of Europe and we always rely very heavily on reports given to us by the Commission.”

In his statement to the Press Mr Barroso said that during his meeting with the President of the Republic they discussed a number of important issues, emphasizing that “President Papadopoulos has reiterated Cyprus’ commitment to Europe, which has been shown so eloquently today.”

Mr Barroso pointed out that he assured President Papadopoulos of “Europe’s commitment to Cyprus. I reiterated my wish for a speedy solution ultimately allowing the whole of Cyprus and all of its people to fully enjoy the benefits of membership of the EU and now of the euro area. Cyprus has fully earned today’s celebrations. It has worked hard to fulfill the convergence criteria and join the euro.

Hi Joe,

I had Nicosia issue resolved in my True Federation Plan. This is what I wrote.

Kikapu wrote:Having already agreed on a TWO State solution with a Federal System of Government, which the line separating both states will run East to West as it does right now, through Nicosia. I believe in today's society, it is counter productive to have a Capital City in TWO pieces, such as South and North Nicosia. It will be very disruptive to have TWO separate State laws (North & South) in ONE location. What I would propose, is to declare the whole of Nicosia as an Independent entity all together from the North and South States. Once again, the "United States of Cyprus" can take a lesson from the USA system, where the Capital city of the USA is Washington, which is situated in no ONE particular State at all, but at a non-state location, District of Columbia, DC. It is a fairly small place and all it has is just US Government Agencies as well as locals who live and work there. In another words, No ONE state can claim to be the Capital State of America. So, I would like to propose, that we do the same in Cyprus, which is to declare Nicosia the Capital of "United States of Cyprus". We can call it, Nicosia DC ( District of Cyprus).

Nicosia DC will be governed by a Mayor and board of Supervisors on all aspects of running a city, with TC's and GC's living and working under this system. Only Federal Laws will apply in Nicosia DC, but each ethnic group living in Nicosia DC, can register to vote for State Senators either in the North or the South, but cannot participate in the local elections of those States, even voting for representatives to congress, in the districts within those states. The residence of Nicosia DC, can vote for all Federal elections, as well as for their local government, ie Mayor, education secretary and so on. Police will be a Federal Force. One more way to really bring the citizens of Cyprus together with this arrangement.

Lovely news Joe. :D

2008 should see off Turkey's bid for any iota of EU membership (not even a privileged position on the cards for them methinks) .... France gets the Presidency and Merkel not far behind supporting them and the anti-Turkish camps in the EU.

Then it's onwards to complete removal of Turkish influence in Cyprus. 8)

Despite Kikapu's attempts to salvage something for the TCs, I really think they have to come to the table with their begging bowls in hand, and give up all ideas of any unfair, privileged power sharing.

We have worked too hard to restore sanity to Cyprus and we must never leave ourselves vulnerable at the hands of the TCs crying out for Turkey for no apparent reason again.

They can take their place in our society as equal citizens, patriotic to Cyprus first and foremost, and stop behaving in that absurd Ottoman tradition of having to rule everyone their way.

What good new my darling phoenix????? Barosso just like the other EU jokers are beating their own drum. If they were serious about the Cyprus problem they would have not considered Turkey fit for membership to EU until such time she stops violating human rights in Cyprus and attempts to genocide the Kurds of Northern Iraq.

Ooooooh I am not too sure that Brown noser of UK has already signed documents naming trnc. The US has a lot of power in Europe and they'll do what te need too, in order to maintain control in europe and the middle east.
