Ferry run to restart soon under Turkish flag

A ferry run between northern Cyprus and Syria will restart very soon under the Turkish flag, Turkish Cypriot Foreign Minister Turgay Avci said Friday.

The run between the Syrian port of Latakia and the Turkish Cypriot port of Famagusta under a Georgian flag created controversy once it started in October amid protests from the Greek Cypriots, who pressured both the European Union and Georgia to suspend the service and cancel the registration of the ship that was under contract to a northern Cyprus tourism company.

Avci told reporters in Ankara that the EU stance in the face of Greek Cypriot protests were favorable to northern Cyprus as Brussels said there was no EU or U.N. document that bans the use of ports in northern Cyprus. “The ferry run will resume very soon under a Turkish flag,” he added.

On the decades-old Cyprus dispute, Avci repeated the Turkish side's readiness to sit at the negotiating table for a final and comprehensive settlement. He said a new momentum will start after the presidential elections in Greek Cyprus next month. Asked whether the Turkish Cypriot side will consent to the removal of Turkish troops from the island if it was set as a precondition to resume peace talks, Avci emphasized, “the pull-out of even a single solider is not under consideration.”

Responding to criticism about the Turkish government's interference in the internal affairs of northern Cyprus, Avci said: “Can there be a Turkish Cypriot government that does not act in harmony with Turkey?... It is true that we are working closely with the Turkish government. Shall I avoid Ankara and speak with Greek Cypriots?” he asked.

The Hellas Fan Club is a fan club, in that it 'fans the flames of Hellenic Nationalism'. Its fanatics like that that fuel conflict...

desperation in its purest form...your scuppering from one hopeless argument to another.

A failed ecoomical and political manouvre of a ferry service to the demonisation of our Tennis Champion.

Weak people...weak arguments.

How soon is "soon" and what difference will it make? The problem with the original ferry line is that there are no legitimate clients and the line was a business failure. No matter what flag the boat carries, the line itself is not worth it, unless you consider illegal immigrants a viable trade.

I think $5,000 US Dollars ahead will be the most expensive Ferry Journey anyone will ever pay to come to the "TRNC", but not as a "Rich Tourist", but rather Iraqi and Syrian Refugees looking for a "back door" entry into the EU.

I think the "TRNC" has perfected the "back door" into anything that can't be obtained from the "front door".

If it was this simple, why did the stupid Turks not use a Turkish flag from the outset.
This will never happen. Pie in the sky.

Don't blame others for your business failures. Illegitimate businesses are just that.

No documents are necessary because it is at the say-so of the RoC as to whether sailings can occur or not. You are asking the wrong authorities.

What has this to do with the ferry? This "politician" seems a little confused and off topic.

Euphemisms for "Ruled by Turkey".
No one believes otherwise, but that Turkey dictates your every move.

Thanks for confirming once again what I have written to be true, hence the fact you are not challenging it, but instead trying to make another "Hell Mary Pass". I will make one concession however. I'm not certain on the $5,000. It could be more or it could be less. Other than that, try and dispute the rest, if you can.

VP, why don't you challenge what I wrote, and tell us why what I wrote is false or unfair instead of giving us your one liners by trying to divert attention from the subject. If you do not want to deal with the question, then just stay out of it if it's too painful for you to bear the truth.
