Cafe culture.

First question.
When in Limassol I take my daughter to a cafe or ice cream parlour, although I am English and talk to my daughter in English and Greek.I do hear other peoples conversations particulary young Cypriots,in high season when these places are busy, there seems to be alot of chat about tourists and their attitude.
Not all of the talk is friendly and in some cases very aggressive,is this general or am I going to the wrong places.Russians also get a good and hostile tongue lashing.

Yes, it's very typical here in Cyprus. They're just angry with the world. :D

This probably happens everywhere. Cypriots want to be seen as the Lords here 'cause it's their country. :D
I don't really know where this anger comes from. I admit that there are people smarter than me out in the open, but it seems like Cypriots don't share the same thing about themselves.
Would that be wise to act the same if some Cypriots pass through my country? I think not, I treat people as people, not as garbage. 8)

Don't get me wrong,I have never had a problem, there just seems to be this less tolerant approach. When I do decide to speak out, which is not always I do reply in Greek and this seems to embarass them, and then we are all friends.
I suppose the question is are young Cypriots fed up with the English ?

purdey in cafes Cypriots would talk about girls/guys, their mobile phones, their cars and maybe politics! I don't think many would even care to talk about tourists. Maybe it was some tourist cafe and some people where just gossiping about everybody around them as a way of having fun?

They are probably bitter because deep down they feel that Cyprus doesn't have anything to offer them. They haven't been outside of Cyprus to see the difference of other places, cultures etc... I would feel sorry for me if I had to live here all my life.

Yes,maybe you are right. It was Starbucks,on the roundabout.Saying that there is a different view regarding the English. My friends, sons and daughters express views that I have never heard before.Albeit very polite, there is a different slant on the critism.
In alot of cases I applaud their freedom of expression,I take no offence but I ask myself where does it come from ? media,Government.

Most Cypriots have been outside of Cyprus. Many Cypriots also study abroad and this spending years of their lives abroad. purdey in this forum which is Cyprus Forum and not English forum I hear many times English people complaining on how England is full with foreigners. The difference is that they know that everybody speaks English so they are more careful in what they say in public places and they keep the nasty comments when they are in private places that they are sure nobody will hear what they say ;)

I personally like multi-culturism... I like diversity... but in such a small place like Cyprus it puts Cypriots at a disadvantage which I can then fully understand the frustration.

About the British in particular a big reason is the British government which is very pro-Turk and against us. But the general issue is because Cyprus is suddenly full with foreigners and Cypriots are not used in this.
