coming to cyprus finally English/Cypriot-questions

Postby andreas123 » Fri Jan 18, 2008 1:27 pm

Hey am nicosia born Greek/Cypriot
came to the UK to study 7 years (from cyprus)ago met a UK-born cypriot girl (so she's as we call english/cypriot) got engaged etc and coming back home permanently in april with her to get married and start a -hopefully-better life in cyprus that we have in the UK.

Got a couple of questions- people who moved stuff from the uk to cyprus who was your shipping company? can you provide details? we are not bringing any cars or furntiture, just a couple of computers, books, and loads of clothes-so not sure who to go with any reccomendations?

2nd - Work? I am ok to find work i have already being in contact with some people and it is not hard for me to find work. The problem is the fiancee although she speaks greek (not fluently) and she already has a cypriot national id card etc where would she be able to find work- i've heard the british council is good and british high commision in nicosia,,,(we will live in nicosia since i am from there) does anyone know any companies that would employ an English/Cypriot gal with a uni degree in Business?

3. is anyone in this situation- i know english/cypriots have a different more traditional-way of thinking than local cypriots and often clash- do you like cyprus up to now?

thanks!

Half Cypriots have a uni degree in Business. If you already found a job for you thats great but for your fiancee it will not be easy. Just a uni degree in Business doesn't mean much unless she has very strong personality and leadership skills. Without such skills and without good knowledge of Greek the best she can hope for is a position as a secretary or something like that. :(

I used 5 Continents in Cyprus for shipping. They are the best in Cyprus. Probably not the cheapest but the most proffesional.
They associate with another company in the UK called Cavenco (not 100% about the name)
I wasnt that impressed with them(cavenco) but my stuff arrived in one piece and thats what we you are after right?

I would check the situations vacant section of the Cyprus Weekly. There are plenty of low paid jobs for people who can only speak English in call centers and offices. Well paid jobs are few and far between in Cyprus.

What are you guys trying to do - make them change their mind?!

I was in the same boat as your wife when I moved to Cyprus 15 years ago and yes there are some shitty jobs around for non Greek speakers however there are some exceptional International companies based in Nicosia which might just have vacancies. Here are some examples:

Good Luck with the move......
